Rachel has picked out another picture. This is of me in 1994. The story goes like this:
My first year of teaching was very rough. I didn’t know classroom management very well, and the kids took advantage of it. It was such a bad time that I decided to grow a beard over the summer. I figured that if I looked older the kids would treat me with more respect. They didn’t. I didn’t like the beard, so for Halloween I shaved it down to a goatee and dressed in this outfit. It’s what all the kids dressed like in 1994 in Seattle. None of the other teachers recognized me. None of the kids recognized me. It was fun!
So when I went to Texas for Christmas, I thought I would surprise my parents by getting off the plane dressed like this. It was more fun! And that’s why, in a picture of my 1994 Halloween costume, there is a Christmas decoration hanging on the doorknob.

Come on, who is this really?
AAAHHHHH!!! A KID ATE BRAD!!!!!!
Was your eyebrow bigger back then, or does it just look bigger bacause of the other dark facial hair accentuating it?
Haha! My eyebrows were still connected at the time. I have achieved separation now. Did you catch the earring? It was a finger ring that split, so I could just pinch it on my ear.
I think what makes it very bizarre is that your eyes look brown – or at least dark. Weird, man.
Thanks Brad – you brought up the “unibrow” subject again (refer to “haircuts” entry number 4.) I’ll have to dig up some 1970′s photos of my unibrow. My kids battle with this problem today. So, what method do YOU use – tweezers or some fancy mechanism that yanks your hair out by the root?
Lauren – I have a question for you. If my roots (hair) are turning gray, but the majority of my eyebrow hairs are still dark brown – should I be dying my hair to match my eyebrows? The alternative is just ghastly!
PS to you – love your website’s motto – I feel everyone should find some time in their day to “waste time!”
OK – midnight! Papers are graded, suitcase is packed. Nashville – watch out – BLS middle school teachers are coming to a conference near you!
