A Trip to Omaha

Posted by Brad on December 31st, 2006 — Posted in Journal

The internet is back! Yay!

A couple days ago, we went to Omaha to fetch Lloyd from the airport. While we were there, we made a couple stops. Beth wanted to get some Sky Flakes, which are some of the yummiest crackers ever. They are from the Philippines, so they aren’t just sold anywhere. We went to a place called “World Market” to get them. I was thirsty, so I got some water there. It was water from Norway! To my knowledge, this is the first water from Norway I have ever had:

Ja, VI elsker dette landet (Yes, We Love This Country)

After that, we went to The Gadgeteer. It is one of the coolest stores I’ve ever gone to. It’s full of amazing things. On my last visit to them, I got my awesome rubber belt. This time, I saw something that I had once owned but that had been destroyed by my students: the funnest puzzle ever. It’s like a 3-D tetris puzzle, but with a twist. Before you begin, you roll the dice and remove the two pieces of those colors. The remaining pieces form a cube. It’s like several puzzles in one! I was so glad to see it, I immediately snatched it up.

Will puzzles like this stave off my dementia?

Only Two Lights!

Posted by Brad on December 30th, 2006 — Posted in Journal

Lloyd and Lauren’s internet isn’t working! It stopped yesterday around 8am. No internet?!? How can we survive? How do you make a Manhattan? What is the theme music for the 1931 movie “Dracula”? What will the weather be like in Colorado this weekend? Where else can we find such answers but the internet? How will I check my email every 15 minutes?

Fortunately, I’m able to come over to my sister’s house to post.
Thank you Harold and Beth!

The guy came over to check the internet connection today and was able to determine that the problem was not in Lauren and Lloyd’s house, but rather outside somewhere. He spent several hours in the cold rain up on the electrical poles, but could not locate the problem. He will come back on Monday.

In the meantime, the modem has only two lights. If the connection were working, there would be three. The modem is the black box on top.
AAHHH!

Runza

Posted by Brad on December 29th, 2006 — Posted in Journal

We ate at Runza for lunch yesterday. Runza is a fast food restaurant that serves a specialty item (called a runza) that is a bread pocket filled with beef, cabbage, onions, and seasonings. It’s of German-Russian origin. Runza restaurants can be found almost exclusively in Nebraska.

I often get a cheeseburger at Runza because they are very good. Yesterday I decided to get a runza because it had been a long time. Runzas are really tasty. The only thing I can compare them to is another regional restaurant called Krystal Hamburgers. Krystal is in the South. If you haven’t had a Krystal burger, a close approximation would be White Castle. If you don’t know what THAT is, I got nothin’.

Anyway, it was a nice lunch. People in Seward love Runza. It was packed.

Here’s my cheese runza sandwich:
Best with mustard.

Lauren is Home

Posted by Brad on December 28th, 2006 — Posted in Journal

Lloyd and Lauren have been gone since I got here. They were visiting Lloyd’s family in Missouri. I have been making myself at home since Sunday, but last night Lauren came home. Lloyd stayed behind to spend some time with his brother who hadn’t yet arrived. He’ll be flying in tomorrow. While they were gone, Lauren made it very welcoming in their house. There were sticky notes on everything.

Here was the main note:
Theres more on back... hehe

She left more Christmas sweets for me.
I liked the no-bake cookies just below the note.

She left instructions for her coffee maker.
I havent used it yet because, despite my frequent postings about it, I dont drink coffee unless I have to. Yet.

She even left a note on my favorite food in the house, the cereal.
Fruity Pebbles or Frosted Flakes? Fruity Pebbles or Frosted Flakes? Fruity Pebbles or Frosted Flakes?

She also left a note on the refrigerator to let me know I could have all the ice I wanted!
I have not yet, I am afraid to say, used any ice.

Hotel Night!

Posted by Brad on December 27th, 2006 — Posted in Journal

Last night we had our annual “Royuk Hotel Night”. Each year, Grandpa and Grandma get hotel rooms for all of us at a hotel that has a pool and hot tub. The kids enjoy swimming in the pool, and the adults enjoy sitting in the hot tub.

Tara was particularly fun to watch. She wouldn’t get in the pool, but LOVED to watch. She reminded me of some invalid from a black and white movie who sits and watches as everyone else has fun.
Rear Window? Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?

She did eventually get in though. She had fun floating in the inflatable ring.
Whos swimming now?

The hotel was a fun stay, but they didn’t give Mom and Dad their wake-up call at 4:15 so they could get to the airport in a timely manner. :-(

Nice hotel, bad wake-up call.
The breakfast buffet (at the bottom of the picture) was yummy!
