Spooned

Posted by Brad on January 31st, 2007 — Posted in Journal

We spooned Peggy for her birthday yesterday. It was so fun to surprise her! :-D I continue to get mugged, and no one will claim responsibility. But this was a one day spooning, so we were all present for it. We brought the spoons in to school and Michele put them into a vase with some silk flowers.

Would FTD do an arrangement of spoons?

I got her a spoon from the International Pet Expo. It is a cat tail spoon. When I was getting it, the workers at the booth said, “Does she like cats?” I said, “No, she likes spoons!” hehehe

Cabinet Handles! …Half Here

Posted by Brad on January 30th, 2007 — Posted in Projects

First, I have to say: Happy Birthday, Peggy! Yay!

I got a package yesterday! It was from Restoration Hardware! It was my cabinet handles! But it was only the cup-pulls. The knobs haven’t come yet. Dang it!

I would have started installing them already, but their arrival took me by surprise. I will probably wait until the weekend to actually do anything about this. But it sure is nice to have half my handles. No more poking fingertips behind the drawer fronts to pull things open! Yay!

A foretaste of things to come...

Rainforest Shower

Posted by Brad on January 29th, 2007 — Posted in Gardening

I hate red spider mites. They are the worst pest of indoor plants. I don’t know where they come from, and after I get rid of them I don’t know where they go. They are so small you can hardly see them, yet they can suck all the juice out of a houseplant and start to kill it before you even notice.

If a plant does get red spider mites, you have to get rid of them immediately. By the time you notice, it’s almost too late. The best method I’ve used is to spray the plant with water. Red spider mites hate water. When they get wet, they go to wherever red spider mites go when they’re not on your houseplants. It can be a wet job to rinse all the leaves on a plant, so I often take the plant with me into the shower. When the plants are big, it makes me feel like I’m showering in a rainforest, except the water is warm and I’m not standing in mud. And there are no bugs. Or monkeys.

If there was enough room in my tub, I would just maybe keep a big plant in there all the time. But no mud or bugs. Or monkeys.

World of Pets Expo

Posted by Brad on January 28th, 2007 — Posted in Journal

Not having anything particular on the agenda yesterday, I wanted to do something unusual. Coincidentally, the radio had a commercial playing in the morning that said something unusual was happening at the Maryland State Fairgrounds. It was the World of Pets Expo. I thought it might be a fun diversion, so I went.

It was kind of interesting. There were dog agility courses, and that was fun to watch for a while. They had some dogs and cats on display… also interesting. The vendors were a little scary because their whole life was about their dog or cat. (If it was a World of Plants Expo, I probably wouldn’t be saying that. hehe) Anyway, it was a nice time. Dog and cats and scorpions and rabbits and all…

Here’s a sheep dog running the agility course. He was so fast he was a blur! (Not really).
Faster than a speeding pullet. (At least I THINK he could catch a chicken)

Here are some of the friendlier-looking animals from the show that weren’t dogs or cats. They’re alpacas!
Their hair makes me smile... Dude, wheres my skateboard?

Birthday Dinner

Posted by Brad on January 27th, 2007 — Posted in Journal

My birthday dinner came in the mail yesterday! The Chameleon Cafe is a nearby restaurant where I really enjoy eating. It’s a converted row house, so it’s a cozy little restaurant. It’s not Fastfood, and the prices reflect that, but the food is great! Their menu changes each season so I can’t recommend anything specifically, but I can say the best fish dish I’ve ever eaten was from there. It was monkfish wrapped in bacon (mmmm…bacon…) served with a citrus sauce. I can still taste it in my dreams. It was awesome!

Anyway, a couple years ago I joined their Birthday Club. That is to say, I wrote my name and address in a book they have. Now I get a card every year that says I get $15 off my birthday dinner! Isn’t that cool? It’s valid for a week before and a week after February 8. Yay!

Happy Birthday to me, Happy Birthday to me...
