I came home from church yesterday and felt very sleepy, so I took a nap. A three hour nap. The second day after not getting enough sleep is usually my sleepy day. I guess that was really true in this case. Saturday I thought I was fine. I slept for about an hour and a half when I got home and thought it was enough. But I was really out of it.
Which brings us to the “Lies” part. I didn’t clean out my truck on Saturday. I didn’t do anything productive at all. I was embarrassed to say so because I hadn’t done a Lenten Chore on Friday either. But yesterday was different. I got a few things done, so I feel like I should come clean about Saturday.
Which brings us to the “Washing Machine” part. I dyed the couch samples in the washing machine. I thought I had cleaned it out very well. Even so, “Darks should go first,” I said, “then lights, then whites.” That way, if there was any dye residue, it wouldn’t show as well on colored clothing. Well wouldn’t ya know, there was some dye there still when the whites went through. And now they’re all pinks. ALL my whites. (It’s been a long time since I did laundry.) I have now bleached them three times with progressively larger, more insane amounts of bleach. They are a lighter pink, but they’re still pink. RIT sells a dye remover. I’m hoping that might work better than the bleach did.
Yesterday’s Lenten Chore: Clean and straighten the dining room.
I have several dye samples for the couch now. I was originally thinking I would do reddish-orange because I really like my coffee table and it has some orange in it. After looking at the samples, I now kind of like brown. The only problem is that I will now have to paint the walls. They would have to be something that is darker than beige or tan. Then the walls and couch would be brown, and the curtains and recliner would be black. Orange could be an accent.
Here are the colors of the room:

Yesterday’s Lenten Chore:Clean up the inside of my pickup. Nothing. (Updated 3-26-07)
Last night there was a lock-in at school. It was offered at our school’s auction. As it turned out, the one who won it was Michele’s dad. He got it for Michele’s son. He could invite 11 of his friends to stay at school from 8pm to 8am. Under the supervision of teachers, they would play in the gym, have some pizza and make some cookies in the cafeteria, and hang out in the hallways watching movies and playing games.
It was very fun. Most of the kids conked out around 4am, but a few committed souls stayed awake all night. Here are some photo highlights:
Playing in the gym
Making pizza. Michele is using a pot lid to cut pizza. Kim has snapped from lack of sleep. Fortunately, no one was injured.
Making cookies. Debbie brought in dough and they topped it with their choice of toppings.
This is the group who tried to stay awake all night. Some of them made it. Playing computer games helped.
Everybody left pretty quickly after 8am, but two of them had to stay for detention from 9 to 10. Here is one of the poor souls. Heh, heh, heh…
UPDATE: Here’s David. He made it to the end of the lock-in without sleeping, but fell asleep waiting to leave for home.
I got a new couch while my family was here. I’ve been looking for one for a long time. In my shopping experience, couches either look good or are comfortable. It’s hard to find one that is both. I did find one at Crate and Barrel, but it was $1500. I decided to wait a little and not get that one. More recently, I had seen one at IKEA. It wasn’t as comfortable as I might’ve liked, but it did at least look good. But by the time I decided to buy it, the only color they had left was white. Yikes! It would look like junk within a week!
Then as we were shopping last Friday, I saw it again. And it was on sale! Normally $450, now $300. That’s pretty dang cheap. It was still only offered in white, but now I wondered if I couldn’t just dye the cover. IKEA stuff all requires assembly anyway, so I could easily put the cover in a washing machine with some dye.
So I bought it! Woo hoo!
Now I just have to decide what color to dye it. I’m working on some samples that are sold as placemats but are the same material as the couch cover. I’ll post them when they’re all ready.
Yesterday’s Lenten Chore: Bundle couch cardboard boxes to leave on the curb.
Last week I heard a recording of a boy choir called Libera. After searching iTunes for a while, I found three songs I liked and downloaded them. Rather than waiting for a whole CD’s worth of new music, I just burned these three to a disc. I’ve been listening to them the last couple of days between school and home.
One of the songs stuck in my head.
Yesterday, I had Voca Me looping in my head all day long. And it was LOUD. At times, it seemed like I would have a hard time hearing the kids because of the loud, loud music in my head. I thought it would be gone this morning, but it’s just replaced with something else. Make… it… stop!
Below is a video of the song. I don’t particularly care for the English words to this song, but the other parts just get stuck in my head. The video itself is just weird. What was looping in my head yesterday was timestamp 3:30 to the end. It’s kind of a quiet recording, so you might have to turn up the volume. Turn it up REALLY LOUD and you’ll hear what I was experiencing all day yesterday.
The other songs I got were called Vespera (I like the words to this one) and Sanctus (based on Pachelbel’s canon).
