It has been a long time since I read books in any quantity. Intending to get several Science Fiction books read this summer, I went searching for a list. I found a list of “Top 10 Science Fiction Novelists of the ’00s — so far”. This first book has been really good. I’m really looking forward to the next one. Thank you, Marc Andreessen, whoever you are.
The book I’ve finished is called Altered Carbon by Richard K. Morgan. It is in the cyberpunk category of Science Fiction, which is a little more pessimistic than things like Star Trek, where poverty and disease have been almost entirely eliminated, but that can make a story more realistic as well, so I really enjoyed it. Before I continue with my list, Lloyd is having me read an historical fantasy book. I don’t exactly know what that means, but he says it’s good, so I’ll read it.
Did the Catholics get any respect in the end? It’s ok, you can tell me…I don’t imagine I’ll ever read it, if I ever make time to read a book again in my life…silly babies and toddlers taking up my time…
Again, this is Lauren. I hope Brad’s name doesn’t pop up.
“Altered Carbon” – it sounds like it could be a horror story based in a school. A tale where a haunted no. 2 pencil ruins a young boy’s ACT test, destining him to a life of McJobs. Scary!!!
So this book won some kind of Dick Award? And that’s a good thing?
she said…
historical fantasy?!? Cool. What is the title?
It’s also ‘ferociously readable’. The new book is Quicksilver – not as ferocious, but still readable.
It’s called Quicksilver by Neal Stephenson. I haven’t started it yet. It has an old map of Europe inside the front cover and a map of London inside the back cover. That’s all I know. Lloyd says, “It’s one of the best books I’ve ever read, and I’ve read several.” Sounds interesting.
Several? That seems a gross understatement, doesn’t it?
It was a direct quote. It didn’t seem meet and right to mess with it.
Cool. I love to get recommendations on books. Might have to hit the library today.
Let me be the first to say that’s a mighty fine table (or whatever) under the book!
Lauren, did you just dust it or something? It’s almost as beautiful as that carpet from an earlier post!
Why, thank you. I’ve had it professionally dusted.
Here’s another good Sci-Fi one for you – its called Pandora’s Star. The pace is a little slow, and you can use it as a doorstop when you’re through, but I’m really enjoying it!
Plus, it gave me something to do on the 12 hour flight to Minneapolis.
