Tub Licker

Yesterday after my shower, something happened that has not occurred in years: Ned licked water out of the bathtub.

Ned has always been very licky. I suppose most cats are. Years ago, when I kept Ned’s food and water downstairs, he would jump into the bathtub after almost every shower and lick the water out. It’s why I never used one of those spray-after-you-shower cleaning products.

The ants kept finding Ned’s food when it was downstairs, so I put it in the upstairs hallway. And I put his water bowl in the bathroom so I could change the water often. He doesn’t lick the tub anymore. Until yesterday.

I quickly got my camera to document the occasion:

Maybe I could train him to clean the floor.

    Bobbie’s a tub licker, too.
I think it’s because we keep her food and water by the washer and dryer and there’s always lint in her water…

Perhaps this was Ned’s celebratory “Woo hoo – you can shower up here again!” licking ceremony, performed only by cats of Egyptian extraction (aren’t they all?). Unless this was your downstairs tub…in which case, my theory shifts to “The porcelain keeps the remaining water cooler than his water dish” or “He can’tr lick his fur, since he has none, so he resorts to licking porcelain” or…Ned’s just a little unique. You pick.

(cue music -to the tune of ‘Matchmaker’)
    Tub-licker, Tub-licker,
    Lick me a tub.
    Just use your tongue.
    Give it a scrub.
Day after day in the bath it’s too wet,
so just clean it off, oh – my – Ned!

Jack did that when we first got him. We even stopped changing his water bowl because he always got drinks from the drip in the tub. I always thought it was an Illinois thing because when we moved away from there, he stopped.

Gizmo, my dog, used to lick the shower stall- and he used to eat his very own special daily offerings; but only when it was cold outside.

Luckily, he no longer indulges in either practice.

Nice effort on the song, Lauren.

Thanks! Sorry about your dog’s strange habits (really, just the one). I’m glad he’s better!

Is it possible that Ned is a member of Opus Dei? Could he have been trying to wash his mouth out with soap for some hideous act he committed? He is awlfully Silas-y looking after all …

A membership in Opus Dei would explain a LOT of the things he does, especially the cilice he hides behind his litter box. Hmmm…

i simply love ned sooooo much~:) he is so cool.

my 13 yr. old cat, lunella is a big drinker of water from the faucet and every time we go to the bathroom she waits for the water to start running, jumps ups on the vanity, knocks over everything and drinks out of her “fountain.” often we just leave the water running for her and go do something else and then come back. Cats! 🙂
