Holey Floor, Batman!

Happy Birthday, Deanne! Dang it, I forgot to include this before you read today’s post. I hope you check again.

The water from my leaking pipe had clearly rotted the floor in the downstairs bathroom. Besides smelling it, I could see that the mortar around the floor tiles had cracked from the sagging wood beneath them. And one of the tiles had fallen through when I stepped on it.

Yesterday I pulled up the affected tiles and removed the rotted wood. It was pretty gross. Besides knowing that it was toilet-pipe water that had soaked this wood, it was also full of centepedes, rolly-polly’s, and spiders. Ugh! But I pushed through the work and cleaned up the area. The support beams that are left have some rot on the tops of them, so I’m going to use some scraps of two-by-fours and two-by-sixes to reinforce them, then I’ll put plywood down, then I’ll put the tiles down again.

BEFORE
You do NOT want to step here.

AFTER
You can see into the basement.

I’m impressed… I’m really glad we don’t have any rotten floors in our house, because we could NEVER do that! We do have a leaky shower, though, so at some point we’ll have to pay someone to fix that rotten wall…

Could the odor you smelled actually have been from the pew in the basement? (sorry)

I really think you should look into getting your own Home-Fix It show! It’d be hilarious & helpful!

BTW: Did you actually get the tiles up without breaking them?

I am freaked out by your DIY skills. Where did all of this come from? Who are you??

Did you wear gloves? I would have worn gloves. (jibbly jibbly)

Your bravery genes are showing again, Mr. Royuk – one never knows what one might find when one begins escavating, exhuming, etc. Seems to me it’s possible the long grey and yellow tapeworms living beneath your floor may have contributed to the fragrance or rotting you’ve experienced……what?…….oh……phone lines, eh? Well, never mind then…….won;t even ask about that aluminum duct front left that seems to go nowhere….

Thanks for the well-wishes everyone! I did, in fact, request nice weather for the weekend. It doesn’t always work out, but I’ll keep requesting nice labor days for all of us!

If you want to find out what I did, you can check out my new blog: https://marino-johnson.org/blog. I don’t think it will look exactly the same as Brad’s forever, but we’re still playing with features.
