More Darkness

Posted by Brad on December 31st, 2007 — Posted in Journal

I seem to be sleeping later here in Nebraska. I think it’s dark later in the morning. It makes me feel lazy or something, but I guess I am on vacation.

It could also have to do with the window dressing in my bedroom window. It is not a womforter, but it’s still pretty thick. I’m glad for its added warmth, but it is darker than the usual dressings on the windows, which are stained glass window clings.

Fortunately, Michele sent some help with me. It was a present I wasn’t to open until Christmas.

Do you see my present? No, it's not the cat.

It's a bird, it's a plane... it's a nightlight!

B-Ball

Posted by Brad on December 30th, 2007 — Posted in Journal

My niece Rachel was playing in the last game of a basketball tournament last night. We went to see her play. We’re proud of her because she’s playing varsity ball as a 9th grader. She’s got skillz.

The game was exciting. We took the lead early and hung on to it until the last few minutes of the game. Then the Fairbury “Jeffs” took the lead and kept it. Since my mom grew up in Fairbury, she was able to explain what a “Jeff” was. It comes from “Jefferson County” and she said the mascot was this short man with a funny mustache. I guess that makes me feel not so bad about having a fleur-de-lis as a mascot.

During the game, I sat with my nephew Daniel and niece Anna. Anna likes to play kitty. Daniel thinks farts are funny. A good time was had by all.

After the game we all went to the buffet at a local pizza place. It was yummy and a fun way to end the night even if we didn’t win.

Good form.

Thirty-Three and a Third

Posted by Brad on December 29th, 2007 — Posted in Journal

Yesterday Beth marked her third-of-a-century mark with a party. Actually, we surprised her. It was fun. I think I most enjoyed hearing her explain it to some of the attendees. Some people were having trouble understanding the concept. “Do you always celebrate a third of a year?” Hehe. The next landmark is 35, Beth. Then you can be president!

People brought funny thirds of things as gifts. The Baltimore contingent was well represented. Sorry for the crazy eyes in this picture, Beth, but it had to be posted. (Would it help if we told everybody you don’t get much sleep at night?)

Thanks, Michele!

My mom prepared a special shirt for the occasion. Maybe we should make these available for purchase. We could start a whole new tradition. We could say it’s uniquely American. Celebrate your Thirty-Three and a Third! God bless America!

A proud American tradition.

A Quick Trip to Lincoln

Posted by Brad on December 28th, 2007 — Posted in Journal

I didn’t get my flax seed meal before I left Baltimore, but I knew there was a tree-hugger store in Lincoln, so I figured I could get it there.

Yesterday was the day. We went to Lincoln to get my flax seed, to return some things to Target, and to check Linens and Things to see if they had the color of sheets Beth’s been after. Beth didn’t find her sheets, but the Target visit was successful. And I did get my flax seed meal.

The Nebraska version of a tree-hugger store was similar in a lot of ways to the Baltimore tree-hugger store. But I have to say, I didn’t see poseurs there like I do in Baltimore. It just looked like a lot of granola-eating, earth-loving, enviro-freaks. It was nice to not have to deal with the fakers. There’s nothing worse than a fake tree hugger. Except maybe a fake bird watcher. I hate fake bird watchers!

Lauren made friends with the checker because they got to talk about Chicobags.

I’m glad to have my flax seed meal. I’ll add it back in to my morning routine. Here’s mud sawdust in your eye!

The elusive Nebraska Treehugger can be found only in small areas of the state.

The Blue Heron

Posted by Brad on December 27th, 2007 — Posted in Journal

Yesterday was a relaxing start to my days here. I woke up crazy-late, then didn’t shower until noon. The afternoon was spent hanging out at Harold and Beth’s and watching Tara play in her ballerina clothes and listening to the funny sounds Tim makes. A trip to Walmart was a nice diversion.

At night, the grown-ups all went to a relatively new bar in Seward called the Blue Heron. Downstairs is an art gallery during the day. Upstairs is a cool bar at night. My mom brought crazy Christmas hats, and we had various kinds of drinks. I was cold, in spite of my heavy Belgium coat, so I got a hot drink. I didn’t get a picture of it, but some of Harold’s former students were there. They made him look small, which was hilarious. Harold is always the biggest one in the room. Those guys were GIANTS.

Here we are enjoying all the meats and cheeses my mom brought:

Cheers!
