Eating Blood Again

Yesterday after church I went with Denis to a buffet. It was hosted by a caterer in the area that wanted to get more exposure by having people taste their stuff. The catering company is owned and run by Filipinos, and the food they serve is Filipino as well. A classmate of Denis’ from his anesthesia program is related to the caterers, so she invited him to come.

The dinner was at a Catholic church nearby. After finding the correct door to go in, we got right to the food. The line started with pancit, which is stir-fried noodles. I really like these, so I knew that would be fine. Then came some small lumipa (the Filipino version of egg rolls). Next was a pot of black soup. The server said, “Want some chocolate soup?” I smiled and said, “I know what that is.” It was blood soup. I took some anyway, because I felt a little conspicuous as the only non-Filipino there. There were some little rolls on the table next to the blood soup. Farther down the line was another soup, and a bowl of something that was presented like a salad. I took some of everything.

Here is what it looked like. After the picture, I’ll tell you what it tasted like.

A beautiful spread of food. I was so hungry!

The salad-looking thing at 10 o’clock in the picture was a bowl of tofu and pork skin. The tofu was okay. The pork skin was one of the strangest textures of food I have had in my entire life. Denis kept joking with me that it was pig ear. I’m still not sure if he was serious or not, because it really did feel like chewing on an ear (or at least what I imagine it would be like to chew on an ear.)

The soup at the top of the picture was a creamy rice and chicken soup. It rocked! I ate ALL of that.

The blood soup wasn’t that bad. The liquid part sort of tasted like gravy, but with a liver flavor to it. The chunks in the soup were big ol’ cubes of fat. After eating one and feeling kind of queazy, I didn’t try another. I did eat all the liquid though.

The pancit was good. If you’re ever at a Filipino restaurant and don’t know what to get, go for pancit. It’s always safe. :) The lumpia (egg rolls) were also good, as was the little roll (which I don’t remember the name of). Dessert was also really good. It was sticky rice (very sweet and brown-sugary) with fresh mango slices and ice cream.

I was absolutely stuffed at the end of things. And pretty proud of myself for eating all that strange food.

But I don’t think I like eating ears. Next time, I’ll say I’m allergic.

Shopping

I went shopping yesterday in order to prepare for my Carnation survey. Since I am supposed to take pictures of my cabinets and refrigerator, I had to get some food to put in them. They’re usually pretty empty. I had a few things specifically on my list. Anything else would be extra.

First I had to go to BJ’s (our local membership warehouse store) to get Carnation. My previous boxes of Carnation aren’t all gone yet, but I wanted the “Carnation shelf” to be full for my pictures. While I was there, I got the giantist box of Pepsi cans I’ve ever seen. 36 in one box!

Next I had to get some cereal. My cereal shelf was not full, and was looking kind of sad. I got Apple Jacks, Golden Crisp, and Raisin Bran. This joined my Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Cocoa Puffs to fill the cereal shelf nicely.

I had to go to a different store to get milk. The milk at my local Safeway is Lucerne, and it has been previously established that Lucerne milk goes bad before the date. I went to CVS (a pharmacy) for my milk. It is Lehigh Valley brand. I have been very satisfied with this high-quality milk.

I also needed more flax seed meal. This meant a trip to the tree-hugger grocery store. The one I went to is called Whole Foods. I was glad to be going there, because I needed more floss. I have come to really like Tom’s of Maine Floss. Like their toothpastes, the floss has no artificial sweeteners. I also like its texture. It’s kind of thick, but smashes flat. I have been out of floss for a while, and Tom’s floss is kind of hard to find, so I bought three packages. That should last me for a while!

Waxy, spearminty goodness.

Old Money

I had lunch duty a couple of days ago. I usually eat something out of the machines on days like that. There’s no time to microwave something, and I’m not very good at getting a nice lunch together.

While I was waiting for my turn at the sandwich machine, the girl in front of me kept putting her quarter in and it kept coming back out. She eventually turned to me with the quarter in her outstreched palm and said she couldn’t get it to work. I saw that she had an old quarter. I could tell it was all silver because of its coloring, so I told her. She didn’t care. She just wanted her food. I offered to trade with her and she accepted.

The coin is heavier than newer quarters. It really feels nice in your palm. This quarter is from 1957. For the sake of this post, I went looking for stuff that happened on January 19, 1957. I found a bunch of stuff, but I like THIS page the most. It is Annabelle Johnson’s journal. It looks like blog entries to me. I wonder what the January 19th entry means: “Boys were coasting.”

So silvery...

See the tiny 'D' under the wreath? Dever mint.

Well, That’s Just Great

Since I’ve come back from Christmas break, I have hardly had a normal class day. We started back on January 3. I had two days, then a weekend. Monday, January 7 would be the beginning of a full week of normal classes, but then I had jury duty the rest of the week. This week looked a little more promising, but then Wednesday, the eighth graders all took a day to visit the high school. They were back again yesterday, but then it snowed. We were out at 1pm.

Will I ever get back into the groove of school? It’s not looking good. Today is a one hour delay, and Monday is MLK Day.

Maybe I should get another job on the side or something. Or start a hobby. Or stalk someone. I’m not so good at managing extra time. Last night I spent a few hours sitting at my computer playing a game from the Bejeweled website called Zuma and a new game I found called Fancy Pants.

Dang this unregular schedule!

Happy, happy, joy, joy!

Longest Hair

I think my hair is the longest it’s been since college. That was what, three years ago? Heh. Looking back on my “haircut” category, I see my last trim was November 25. The cut before that was October 24. But my last serious haircut was August 20. Five months ago.

I continue to have days where I like my crazy-long hair, and days where I hate it. I think if I am able to keep this up, it won’t last beyond the school year. Alton Brown hair is not something a real person has, but something a character has. So I can be “crazy-hair teacher man” with a hairstyle like this, but I don’t think I can be “guy at the mall” with hair like this.

In the meantime, I LOVE the back. I can touch my soft, luxurious hair anytime I want. It’s so nice. I find myself running my fingers through it even while I’m teaching. So soft…

Crazy-hair teacher man.

For comparison, here is my August 20 picture.

Guy at the mall.
