Cinnamon Trees

One of my most exciting Christmas presents this year was cinnamon tree seeds. Beth found them somewhere on the Internets. I have always dreamt of seeing a real, live cinnamon tree. Someday I’ll visit a plantation in Madagascar or Sri Lanka. For now, I’m just excited to have some seeds. I didn’t plant them right away because I didn’t want them to sprout too early. Summer is still a few months off.

As it turns out, I shouldn’t have worried. The package says they can take up to three months to germinate. Sheesh! How will I tell if they’re sprouting or just slowly decaying? Fortunately, Beth got me three packages, for a total of twelve seeds. I have planted them all in a seed sprouting tray. The instructions say to keep the soil between 75 and 85 degrees. I got a heating pad from the pharmacy and put it under the seed tray. I don’t know if it makes the soil 75 degrees, but at least it’s warmer than nothing.

I’m not worrying about light for now. If When they sprout, I’ll move them to a sunny window (or outside if it’s warm enough by then).

Here’s hoping the seeds don’t all just rot!

Now grow, my pretties.

So setting them on top of the radiator won’t give them enough heat? Forget about rotting…you’re gonna roast those little buggars.

Oh, and why on earth do you have bars of soap in your dining room…on the radiator no less…?

    • Brad says:

My thermostat is on the lowest possible setting. I’m just keeping it fired up to keep the edge off the cold and so the boiler stays in good repair. I use electric space heaters in rooms I use often. That radiator actually hardly ever gets warm. And even if the radiator were hot, that isn’t a very warm spot, since the radiator cover has water pans under the lid to increase humidity. The extra layers keep the top of the cover from getting very warm at all.

And don’t you have dining room soap in your house? I would think since you’re normally someone who pays attention to detail in your housekeeping, you would have dining room soap.

Beth-it’s not soap, it’s Dove! It’s want keeps Brad so beauutiful, just ask him!

Does your house smell like cinnamon buns? Ha!

    • Brad says:

I did smell the seeds before I planted them. :)
They do not smell like cinnamon. They don’t smell like anything, actually. If I had an inexhaustable supply, I would have crushed one to see what it smelled like.

    • Carol says:

“No, silly – there’s not enough room for me to SIT on the radiator/heating pad!” (rimshot)

[get it? cinnamon buns?? ah, never mind...]

Actually made those for breakfast before church today – at least SOMEbody’s house smelled like cinnamon buns…

Good Luck with your Cinnamomum Zeylanicums!! And good luck to the rest of us getting any sleep!! Is it just me or does this image come to mind when reading Brad’s new gardening technique?

If my calculations are correct, you now have 3 heating pads plugged in 24/7? Jibblies!
