More Catan

I went to Michele’s house yesterday to teach them how to play Settlers of Catan. She had gotten the game after hearing about what fun we’d had in Nebraska with it. She said that some time when we were off school I should come over and show them how it’s played. I did my best to show them all the nuances, including how to build the tallest structure you can with your unused game pieces while you wait for someone else to take a turn.

I have to say, for a first game, they did really well. The game lasted 2.5 hours. No one was beaten so sadly that they would never be able to show their face again. Our big shortage of the game was wheat. Michele was the road lady, building the longest Longest Road I’ve ever seen. David won, being a big wheeler and dealer. Casey used charm to come in second. I would have won, but you know, I was, er, taking it easy on them. Yeah, that’s it.

After the game, I played Guitar Hero for the first time in my life. I didn’t do too bad, if I do say so for myself. I played “Carry On my Wayward Son”, and didn’t “fail” before the song was over. My left-hand fingers were bruised though. I think I’d need to develop some “Hero callouses” if I played that game with any regularity.

My tower of doom. And David.

Thank You, Carnation

Because I did the Carnation Instant Breakfast survey, I got a gift card from the ad agency. I’ve had trouble deciding what to do with it. If it were cash, I would have put it in the funds I’m saving for Ned II. I carried the card around in my coat pocket for a while, and was struck with inspiration while walking through the Lowes Home Improvement warehouse – I would get my under cabinet lights. The card only paid for one and a half lights, but still, it was nice to have the discount.

I think my problem all along has not been the work it would take to install the lights, it’s been the decisions I would have to make: What kind of lights would I get? How many of them would I need? How would I place them? Yikes!

The decision came down to halogen or xenon. I decided to get halogen, because they were offered in 25 watt size – 5 watts more than the highest offering in xenon. I got a bunch of light fixtures, and brought them home… only to see that the shelves were mislabeled and I had brought home a bunch of 20 watt xenon lights. D’oh! Not wanting to go back to the store, I kept them. Xenon are supposed to be less hot and have better color anyway.

The next decision was how to place them. I want these to be work lights, not decorative lights. It turns out, they’re pretty bright. My only difficulty was the sink. I’ve had a clip-on light socket hanging over the sink for the last year and a half. I’m used to the sink being pretty brightly illuminated. I went back to Lowes for inspiration, and saw them: little one-bulb fixtures that tilted! I got one for each side of the sink.

Their installation was exceedingly easy. I now have under cabinet lights that are controlled by a light switch next to my sink.

The two major kitchen projects that remain are the backsplash, and the cabinet trim and toe-kicks.

It's hard to get a picture of the whole countertop.

A Two Hundred Dollar Haircut

I’m in the middle of a four-day weekend. I think it’s being called “Winter Break” or something. I didn’t want four whole days to pass without doing something unusual, and getting caught up on schoolwork was definitely out.

I decided to get a hotel through Priceline and stay overnight. It really was all about the hotel. I LOVE staying in hotels. At first I was going to do Baltimore, but then I thought maybe I should stay in Washington DC. Then I thought, why not New York? Priceline has you choose an area within the city you’re considering. In selecting a specific location, Times Square was a recognizeable area. I mean, I’ve heard of the “Upper East Side”, but I don’t really know what that means. So Times Square it was. A $100 offer was immediately accepted.

I talked Denis into stopping studying for a while so he could come with me. He is, after all, my New York sherpa-guide. He even knows what “Upper East Side” means.

The hotel was the Crowne Plaza Times Square. It was awesome! It was right in the middle of everything, and was clean and gorgeous. The only drawback was frighteningly fast elevators. I kept thinking we’d shoot through the roof or something.

In the picture below, the brown awning over the trees covered with lights is the Crowne Plaza. There was a Hershey store right next door (see the Twizzler sign) and an M&M store across the street.
8:20am Saturday

Since we were right on Broadway, we went to that place where you can stand in line to get cheap theater tickets. I had seen a sign on a bus advertising a show called “Curtains” that had David Hyde-Pierce in it, so we got tickets for that. At half price. Awesome!

The show was great! We were like 30 yards away from the stage. It was really funny and very entertaining. I loved the dance numbers. Very complicated.

If I took my camera out inside the theater, I risked arrest and execution.

And since I was in New York, I went back to the place I had gotten my hair cut at Thanksgiving. The same guy cut my hair. I was SO much more confident in his skills than in the mall chick from my last haircut. He ended up cutting off quite a bit of hair, but he was doing something specific, so I didn’t mind so much. He styled it kind of forward like Julius Caesar hair. What I really liked was the curl in the front. I thought it was hilarious. It was too bad that I did this on the way out of town. I didn’t get to show it off much.

Will I continue to style it this way?

And in perhaps an interesting bit of irony, my only souvenir was a mug. But I had to get it, because I am drinking coffee with some regularity now, and I’ve been using a regular-sized mug, which is just too small. And it’s an Oreo trivia mug, so it’s kind of boring-looking. The mug I got is GIANT! It holds 18 ounces. AND it’s a Superman mug!

I'm using my head for scale. It's that big!

So all-told, I spent about two hundred dollars. And all I have to show for it is a mug and a haircut.

…I think I’ll do this again next month. Hehe!

What Lloyd’s Been Waiting For

I haven’t been able to post today because the stinkin’ business center at my fancy-schmancy hotel isn’t open on Saturdays. What, don’t people do business on Saturdays? I asked the concierge if there was an internet cafe nearby. There was. In fact it was just around the block. But it didn’t open until 11am. Dang! So then I was going to walk around and check out some of the stores around my hotel, but they didn’t open until 9am. Criminy! What’s all this about “The City that Never Sleeps”? Does that not apply to Saturday morning?

I’m in the internet cafe now, racing against the clock to post so I don’t have to pay for more than half an hour. I’ll do a proper New York post tomorrow. For now, I have to post about what I discovered in my messenger bag this morning. I was trying to re-pack it because the car can stay in the garage until 3, but check out was at 12, so I have to carry my bag until then.

While re-packing, I found a little present that Lloyd must’ve slipped into my bag at Christmas. Or was it last summer? Pretty sneaky, Lloyd. I’ll be watching this tonight when I get home.

Here is where I would put a picture of the “Paint Your Wagon” DVD I found in my bag this morning if this internet cafe didn’t suck. The computer is really old and there isn’t any good picture manipulation software on it. There’s an old version of Paint, but it only saves in bitmap format, which WordPress won’t accept. Where am I, some third-world country?

“Paint Your Wagon” is Lloyd’s favorite movie ever. It’s a musical with Clint Eastwood. He sings even. It’s surreal. I’ll lend it to you sometime if you want to watch it. I have it on DVD now!

I’m home now:
They call the wind Mariah...

My Birthday All Over Again

First of all, I have to say: Happy Flag Day in Canada! It must be some kind of serious celebration here in Maryland, because we’re off of school today. We’re also off for President’s Day on Monday, making this a freaky long weekend. I “pricelined” a hotel for the first time ever. I’m going to Times Square tonight! Woo hoo! More about that tomorrow…

On another “Woo hoo!” topic, Beth’s present for me finally came! It was waiting for me in my mailbox when I got home from school. It was in a festive, padded envelope. Before I say what it is, I have to tell the background story.

The background story: When I went to Nebraska this past Christmas, I used a suitcase I had never used before, because it was big and I needed the space. Not being familiar with it, I had some trouble identifying it as it came out on the carousel. I wasn’t sure if it was black or blue, and I wasn’t quite sure just how big it was. I think it even went around once before I identified it.

So Beth’s present for me was two luggage tags! But not just any old luggage tags. They’re photo tags. And they’re AWESOME! Check them out:

Now if I can keep from forgetting what I look like...
