Turkish Delight

Every year I show “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” in Religion class. It’s a great illustration of allegory, which the Bible is full of. Plus, it’s a Christian allegory. Plus, it’s a fun movie to watch. Well, NOW it’s fun to watch. The 1988 version was a little hard to watch because of old special effects and such.

Anyway, the kids never know what Turkish Delight is, and it seems to be a pretty important detail from the movie, because it’s the tempting “fruit”. I always say that it’s sort of like gum drops, but that doesn’t quite describe it, so then I get some for them to taste. I cut the pieces in half because I don’t want to break the bank getting enough for sixty kids. They usually come in multi-flavor packs. I set the mint ones aside, because the lemon and rose flavors seem more candy-like to me.

Someday I’ll have to see if I can successfully make it. The recipes seem simple, but perhaps not easy. They sound like they call for precision. It also might be hard to find rosewater. I think if I ever went looking, it might end up being some sort of Quest.

Sweet, chewy, rose-flavored goodness.

You should totally try it! Think of the post it would be! I think I’d like to try making rose water. One site says, “Keep in mind that care should be taken when concocting these home recipes. They are not long lasting and are subject to growing bacteria, which may be quite dangerous if used in food.”

    Dangerous? Awesome.

Have you ever had a kid barf after trying one? Because I almost barfed… Blech.

I just tried my 1st ever Turkish Delight … & it was YUMMY or should I say Delightful!! But may I suggest not to cut the mint flavored ones in 1/2 … the color is gross or should I say authentic, it looks like it just fell out of someone’s nose.

I think next week you should show “Van Helsing” or “Blade” & serve up some blood soup.

We played DVDs during the bus ride on our 6th grade trip to Washington today. On the way home we watched Narnia, but had to stop it short when we got back to school earlier than expected. The boy in the movie had just asked that evil queen for turkish delight. How funny that you should post about it today – coincidence? I think not.

BTW – At the National Museum of Natural History, Carol and I noticed that a rabbit had been “removed” from one of the displays. Did you have anything to do with that Brad?
