Old Spoon

I took my pineapple plants outside a few weeks ago. I didn’t take my time adjusting them to full sun exposure, so they’ve gotten extremely sunburned. They won’t be recovering from the damage. I pulled one out of its pot because I wanted to use the pot for something else. Tangled in with the roots was a silver spoon. I had forgotten I put it there.

I found the spoon in the yard of the place I used to rent. The spoon’s handle says “Horn and Hardart Co” on it. After some quick research, I saw that it wasn’t worth a million dollars, so I just stuck it into one of my potted plants. It’s been with me ever since.

When I saw it this time, I decided to take it inside. I must’ve put the spoon in that pineapple plant only two years ago, but I have no memory of it. If I stick the spoon into another pot, who knows how long it’ll be there? Since it was inside, I thought I should clean it. I used Brillo pads on the tougher stuff, and my favorite polish, Simichrome Polish, on the rest. Parts of the spoon are shiny now, but parts are corroded beyond shiny-ness. But now I don’t know what to do with it.

Maybe I’ll stick it into a pot.

BEFORE
Brown and yucky.

AFTER
Fresh and yummy!

Ha! That’s hilarious! Maybe it’s the magic spoon that increases your gardening powers. Don’t ever lose that spoon, man.

(I would pay you a dollar to actually eat something with that spoon.)

Perhaps the added metal is what caused last year’s pineapple to be less than deliciously sweet?

What, are you nuts? Did you read the history behind your spoon? Just think how old it might be! Just think of all the renowned people that might have eaten off of it. You could at minimum sell it on Ebay or you could donate it to the Smithosonian (where they have a Horn & Hardart section), with your name on the plaque as the donor. Spoon mistreater!

I saw spoons like this on Ebay in my search. They were only selling for five bucks, and they were in better condition.

I don’t think this spoon has a special story anyway. Here’s what I imagine the history of this spoon to be:
Some guy stole it from Horn & Hardart and threw it in the back yard of my rental place. I dug it up while planting Four O’Clocks. The end.

You always are thinking that people steal things… Are you some kind of undercover agent?

That is a terrible story. Make it have a witch in it.

I vote that is really is a magic spoon (not that I have a vote in the matter, but everything is more fun with a super power). I think you should frame it. Maybe it could be your special cereal spoon. Or you could hang it from your house as decoration. Ahhh beautiful.

i have one it looks very good it has been in with the rest of my spoons, it was my dads when he was in the korean war

Thanks for the comment, Cathy. I’m glad to hear that your spoon has a much more interesting story than mine. Old stuff without a story is really just junk, but when it reminds you of a person or place that is dear to you, it’s a treasure. 🙂
