Caffeine Resistance AND Sensitivity?

I haven’t been drinking coffee very regularly lately. In fact, I purposely laid off for a while. First I switched to decaf, then I thought “what’s the point?”, then I stopped.

Yesterday at school I was really sleepy in the morning. I decided to make some coffee. After drinking half of my little pot, I didn’t feel any different, but classes were starting, so I didn’t have time to be sleepy. After school we had a teacher meeting, and I was afraid I’d fall asleep, so I drank the remaining coffee. By then it was cold, but at least it still had its caffeine. Wow, did I feel it! I was WIDE awake and jittery. I’m happy to say I didn’t miss any part of the meeting.

Fast forward to 10pm. Bedtime. Not sleepy. Still jittery. Dang.

I worked on chapel while I was in bed. The clock kept moving forward. I kept not being sleepy. At 11pm I decided to lie back and hope for sleep. It came. Thank goodness.

So I guess I now have some limits in regards to caffeine. It will be interesting to figure out what they are. For now, I’ll lay off the coffee.

A blessing and a curse.

D’oh! D’ump!

Yesterday I hurried home from school again so I could put all my garden waste into my truck and take it to the dump. It’s kind of a pain because I have to bundle everything first. If I don’t bundle it, they won’t let me leave it. I don’t understand, but I must obey because it’s the government. Anyway, by the time everything was bundled and I was on the road, it was 4:50. I still had plenty of time before the 7pm closing time. But when I got to the dump at 5:10, it was closed. Closed! The sign I had previously taken a picture of was altered. The 7 was painted over, and there was now a 5 there. They now close at 5pm. Dang! I guess it was silly of me to think operating hours would stay the same for six months.

I have afternoon appointments the next two days, so I guess my truck will stay full of garden waste and bundles of sticks until Thursday. Stupid government.

It's the 'Branches and Trash Express!'

Sauce?

I went straight to school from church yesterday. I’m getting kind of backlogged here at the end of the school year. On my way to school I stopped at Kentucky Fried Chicken. I love a good Crispy Strips meal. The drive-thru girl was particularly nice. I was pleasantly surprised. I usually feel like I’m interrupting them from doing something more important. When she said “Hihowareyou” as I pulled up, I said, “I’m fine, thank you. And how are you?” She looked at me like I said something strange. Or maybe she has the gift of second sight and there’s something wrong with my chi?

Anyway, when I got my meal out, I was surprised to find some condiment packets at the bottom of my bag. It was honey sauce for my biscuit! I used to ask for honey every time, but no KFC has had it for years it seems. And now suddenly I got some honey sauce without even asking. What a great day!

Wait a minute… honey sauce? I’m the biggest fan in the world of cheese flavored sauce, but honey sauce? Why? Why do that? I’ll pass, thank you.

Eighty-nine percent NOT honey.

A Trip to the Garden Center

I went to Homestead Gardens again yesterday. It’s a 45 minute drive, but this amazing garden center is worth it. I took my time browsing around. I wasn’t really there for anything specific. I was just enjoying the day.

I actually did pretty good with resisting purchases. I ended up getting a few Venus Flytraps because they were incredibly inexpensive and because one of my Flytraps from my trip to North Carolina has disappeared. I don’t know if a bird was digging for worms and pulled it out, or if someone swiped it, but it’s gone. I’m sad because it was a red-leafed Flytrap. They aren’t easy to find. I got four more green-leafed Flytraps to join the one green one that survived winter in my bog. I hope they all make it through this next winter and establish a colony.

The mess is from a new layer of peat I put down.

While I was at the garden center I also saw an evergreen with whip-like branches. It reminded me of an octopus or something. I was fascinated. It was only $35. That’s cheap! It is called Cryptomeria japonica ‘Araucarioides’. The tag said it got big. Really big. Basically, it’s a tree. Where would I put another tree? …but it was so cheap! …but it will grow to be a giant. …but it’s so cool!

I got it. I’ll figure out where to put it later.

Doesn't it look like tentacles?

I also planted some other things that I bought about a week ago and haven’t had time to put in the ground. While I was digging, I uncovered these weird fungus things. They’re kind of squishy like an eyeball. Do you suppose they’re called “Eyeball Mushrooms”? I hope they aren’t sentient. That would be creepy.

I see you.

Prince Caspian

I left school almost immediately after the kids yesterday. I was rushing to the theater to see Prince Caspian. We’re taking the whole Middle School to see it next Friday. (When I say “next”, I mean the 23rd. I use “next” to mean the Friday after Sunday, because anything after Sunday is next week. Some people would call the 23rd “this” Friday and say that th 30th is “next” Friday. Why the difference? Is it regional?)

Anyway, Prince Caspian was good. It’s full of action. And it’s fun to see the Pevensies again. And there’s a funny dwarf. (When I say “funny”, I mean he said funny things, not that he was funny looking.) The Christian themes are less obvious though. I think maybe I should prepare something for the kids before next Friday. Maybe there’s some online thing. Or maybe Lloyd has already prepared something, since he is something of an authority on Narnia.

The theater I went to was Lowe’s in White Marsh. It’s my regular theater. There were only six of us who were there early enough to wait in line: a dad and two girls, and a mom and her son. By the time the movie started, the theater was pretty full. Not bad for a 4:20pm movie.

I should have known something was wrong in Narnia by the foreboding look of the sky.
