A Day with the Family

Today after church we had a big family dinner. Mom made fried chicken and we all sat around an ‘L’ shaped table. Brent and Daniel weren’t there because they’re on a four day camping trip for Boy Scouts. Lloyd wasn’t there because he’s at a nerd convention computer convention.

After dinner, we all tried to stay awake while sitting in front of the TV.

In the evening, we went to work on the Concordia College float for the Fourth of July parade on Friday. It was my first exposure to such a thing. It was really interesting. Lauren showed her mad skilz by building an armature for the chicken wire cross. Then we stuffed tissue paper into the chicken wire. There’s more stuffing to be done, but it started to get dark so we went home.

Here’s the beginning of the process. During the parade, I’ll try to get a good shot of the float as it goes by.

L to R: Lauren, Mom, two people whose names I don\'t remember, and Rachel (my niece).

Driving with Two Feet

I went to Lincoln last night to have dinner with my Uncle Paul and Aunt Linda. They used to live in Baltimore and we would have dinner together sometimes. Last night we ate Mexican food and caught up with each other. It was like old times.

In order to get to Lincoln, I had to borrow a car. Lauren was gracious enough to lend me their car.

But it’s a stick-shift.

I’m actually not that bad, but it takes all my concentration to drive when I use a stick-shift. I had several incidents when I was at a stop light going uphill with another car behind me. I’m proud to say I never stalled out and I don’t think I even was hard on the engine.

I’m an excellent driver.

This picture is staged. The car is not actually in motion. No animals were harmed in the taking of this picture.

It’s Miraculous

Lauren was talking about my sour milk last night and jokingly said she had some powdered milk I could try. Not having had it for years and years, I decided to taste it. She mixed a little up using some of my distilled water that had been chilling in the refrigerator.

I was blown away.

It was amazingly like regular milk. In fact, I don’t think I could tell a difference in a blind taste test. This may change the way I buy milk forever. If I can find some simple way to measure the water and powder for ease of mixing, I could buy boxes and boxes of powdered milk and always have milk on hand.

The only thing I’ll need to research is if there is some nutritional drawback to powdered milk. Does it have excess lead? Will it suck minerals from my body? I’ll have to check the Internets…

Lauren gets to use her super-cool bottle! Yay!

Not Again!

Lloyd has departed for a conference and some family visits. As I took him to the airport yesterday, the heavens wept. It actually did storm a lot. I had an adventurous drive through Omaha in their stick-shift car in a torrential downpour while looking for a bathroom stop.

Lloyd’s departure didn’t only coincide with meteorological disturbances, but also dairy phenomena. My milk has gone sour before its time. The “Best By” date is the 30th. That’s still three days away!

What is it with me and milk that sours early? Do I have some kind of super power that sours milk? Do I have an extra-sensory power that I can pick the gallon that’s already going bad? I could add that to my super power to make dogs misbehave and my special ability to choose only mealy apples.

Dang. If this keeps up, I’ll have to start a “sour milk” category for bradaptation.

I still have three days!

Cookout

Posted by Brad on June 26th, 2008 — Posted in Uncategorized

Last night I had dinner in the town square of Seward. In conjunction with the farmers’ market that happens every Wednesday, hamburgers and sodas are offered at a modest price. To be clear, it’s not as amazing as Pop-N-Dog, but it is a cheap night out.

I went with my dad, Beth, Tara, and Tim. We spread a blanket on the grass and enjoyed having some cheap eats.

The cooking is done in the parking lot of Cattle National Bank. Ha! Isn’t that a great name for a bank?

It was kinda hot.

Beth got some cookies at the farmers’ market that had colored sugar on them. Tim fully endorsed their tastiness.

The blue went well with his shirt.
