Rustproof Grommets, My Eye

My shower has a decorative outer curtain and a clear inner curtain. A while ago, in anticipation of house guests, I replaced the inner curtain. When shopping for something suitable, I had stumbled upon a curtain that was said to be invulnerable to mildew. It sounded great. It cost more than other brands, but the clincher was a magical phrase that stood out from all the other phrases on the package: “Rustproof grommets”.

My old inner curtain had rust all over the grommets. It was one of the reasons I had to replace it. What manner of grommet was this that was proof against rust? I gladly paid the more expensive price and giddily hung the curtain.

Over time, my joy has turned to sorrow as the grommets have gone from shiny silver to rusty red. Dang. So yesterday I installed a new curtain. This time I didn’t look for anything magical. I went practical: my new shower curtain has no grommets at all. It was $2.99.

Good-bye, rust.

Hello, overpowering new plastic smell.

“A while ago in anticipation of house guests…” Was that us? When we visited in March of 2007? 16 months ago?

(Oh, and I always go cheap. It’s $3 to replace fergoshsakes. But don’t tell Lauren, because the old one just ends up in the ocean ;) …)

Arrghh!!! The ocean! Plus, that smell is toxic!!! (I went to an environmental presentation at our conference, and had to write a note to the person beside me. “Too bad that the people who feel so passionately about this come off as complete lunatics.” It was pretty embarrassing.)

Anyway, I think you should take a revenge tactic and mail that old shower curtain to the manufacturer with some sort of threatening note – like your post’s title!

Do you think there’s some inner shower curtain that’s biodegradable? I think at hotels they use something that’s like a nylon… hmmmm…

Now you know what to get Brad for Christmas, Lauren.

Bed Bath and Beyond sells them. I picked one up a few months ago because I was tired of the holes in mine. I like to periodically wash mine to spruce it up, but I never get in the washer with a towel or two to prevent damage. It would end up with kinks, then holes, then tears and I’d have to replace every fews years. The nylon one is great! I love it.

I think Kathryn used to just sew her own from regular cotton fabric. She knows how to make buttonholes, though. ….tricksy buttonholes…

    ” … installed a new curtain” hehe … I like that.

“Sorry I can’t help you guys out this afternoon … I got something I have to install in my house.”

Speaking of which, I need to go assemble my breakfast before I install a new bedspread on my bed today.

  4. Lauren says:

You sewed that old curtain into reusable bags, right? ;)

Baltimore City recycles plastic with numbers one through 9 on it. In many other respects, it’s difficult to live in Baltimore City, but this is a nice perk.
