Unintended Consequences

My pond-building has really slowed. As I’ve explained previously, the rock wall and waterfall have been difficult to construct. I’m not easily pleased with how they look, so I’m forever re-doing them. Now that school has started, I expect my progress to be even slower. In the meantime, the pond water has turned a dark olive green. Hello, algae.

Yesterday as I walked past the pond, it looked as if something had blown into the water. It was sprinkled with little black things. What were they? Dust? Seeds? They were MOSQUITO LARVAE! My pond has now become a giant mosquito breeding facility. Dang.

Fortunately, I had a mosquito dunk left over from previous years. It’s a little ring of inert material that has been impregnated with Bacillus thuringiensis v. israelensis, a bacteria that kills the mosquito larvae. It will take a couple of days to start working though, so in the meantime, my hobby will be scooping larvae out with my skimming net and leaving them to die on the sidewalk.

The water was swarming with mosquito larvae. I shouldn't even have been able to take a picture of them.

Good-bye, mosquitoes.

Wow! They’re HUGE!! Hey – take another picture of you sitting in that water now. (heh heh heh)

I’m with you on the mass killing of insects now. I burned a whole colony of carpenter ants alive. It was almost my post for today.

Leo worked with Bacillus thuringensis in Colombia. He was looking for native strains that might have insecticidal properties, like your ring. He also worked with Arabidopsis. I don’t like that one. We had some in Texas in our flower beds. At least it has an easy root to get out.

    *jibblie* *jibblie* *jibblie*

    (is your rank rising?)

    • Brad says:

My rank is lower now than it was a month ago. Lloyd and Lauren are now on the FIRST PAGE! I think it’s because of their post titled “jibblie”. They also appear on the seventh page. I make my miserable showing on the ninth page.

      • Lauren says:

No, no, no. It’s because I search for ‘jibblie’ at work when I’m waiting for something to print. I don’t want Annetteanyone to know I’m goofing around for two minutes.

Gee Brad–You may have missed your opportunity to kill 2 birds with one stone: (put down your shovel–it’s a figure of speech)

“Most of the rabbits are owned by children, and we have a lot of tears in the waiting room.” Don’t tell the children about B. killerabittus towsoni then! [What do you suppose they are tearing in that waiting room - their clothing?]
