Rats!

Actually, it’s ants, but I was using “Rats!” like an interjection.

There are ants in my kitchen! They seem to be smaller than the ones I’ve seen before. And their butts are more pointy. And they don’t seem to like the Terro I always use to kill ants. They LOVE Max’s cat food cans, though. They must be meat-eaters. Meat eating ants… *jibblie* That sounds like a horror movie to me.

I’ll keep putting Terro out, but I might need to find another way to stop this monstrous army.

Out of the hundreds marching by, only two stop for a deadly sip.

Divide And Conquer

Yesterday we tried a new thing at school: Instead of having the regular before-school meeting, we had a “campus work day”. We located things around school that needed fixing, cleaning, organizing, painting, etc… then we broke into groups and did them. It was pretty cool.

As I said earlier, I decided to work on restoring the “privacy screens” between the urinals in the boys bathrooms. I had one divider to hang in the Middle School, and three dividers to hang in the High School.

The Middle School bathroom was kind of fun. It was morning, I was playing an old mixed tape I made for Beth when I was in college, and there were people in the hallway laughing and having fun. After lunch, I hung the three dividers in the High School. That wasn’t as fun. There was no music, no people, and the walls I was drilling into were wearing out masonry bits faster than I could replace them. I persevered, though. Behold, the magnificent result!

BEFORE:
What were they thinking when they installed these urinals? In order to use them, people would be have to be pressed shoulder-to-shoulder. Ack!

AFTER:
I really messed up on one of them, but I dont think anyone will notice.

In the Middle School, several people worked on the copy room. It was a disaster, but now it’s OCD-riffic!

BEFORE:
It's just a little messy.

AFTER:
The sticky-notes are even color coded!

Zero

I went to school again yesterday. It was officially our first before-school workday. Once again, I did things that didn’t really change the appearance of my room. But they were things that needed doing, so I don’t feel too bad. One of these days I’ll need to get my room ready for kids though.

The most exciting thing that I accomplished yesterday is something that I have not experienced since I began having email. My inbox is empty. And it wasn’t just that I put thousands of emails into some folder named “saved”. I did want to save a few emails, but they were categorized into “interesting links” and “temporary storage”. There are a total of ten emails between the two folders. The rest are deleted. And they aren’t just in the “deleted” folder. They are gone. They have been banished into the aether. They do not exist anymore. Finito.

I’m awesome!

It looks like nothing because it IS nothing! Woo hoo!

Enlarged to show texture. Ha!

A Limit?

Yesterday it came time for me to fill my truck with gas. I don’t really keep track of how often I have to get gas. I don’t really even keep track of how much it costs. I have to use my truck, and my truck has to be filled with gas. Since there’s no getting away from it, I don’t worry about it too much. It’s a necessary expense.

But here’s a weird thing: The last two times I’ve gotten gasoline, the pump has stopped before I was done filling up. The first time, it stopped at $50. I swiped my card again and finished filling up. This second time, it stopped at $49. Again, I swiped a second time and finished. It seems strange that this is happening all of the sudden. Is it my card? Is it the stations? Is it the government? I bet it’s the government. Stupid government.

A second swipe for 4.8 gallons? It seems silly...

What?

I’ve made very little progress on the pond lately. My problem has been that I didn’t have the parts I needed. I decided to get a waterfall filter and use it to make the waterfall in the pond. It will make a pretty pool at the top of the wall, and it will make a huge and beautiful sheet of water that falls into the pond. I got the filter and almost everything I needed on Friday. But I forgot the glue to connect the flexible water tube to the fittings in the bottom of the filter box. Dang. The Wicklein’s Water Garden guy (who answered many questions and was awesomely helpful again) had said that I shouldn’t use just any PVC glue. I should make sure it was safe for ponds.

Wicklein’s was closed yesterday, so I went to Home Depot thinking I might find what I need. As I tried to sort through all the varieties of PVC glue, a Home Depot Guy asked me if I needed help.

Home Depot Guy: Do you need any help?
Me: Yes, I’m running some PVC in my pond…
HDG: Schedule forty.
Me: What?
HDG: Schedule forty.
Me: What?
HDG: Schedule forty.
(pause)
Me: What? (starting to giggle a little)
HDG: (Grabbing a PVC fitting) Schedule forty PVC is rated for high pressure.
Me: Oh… good, I’m using it to run water from my pump to my waterfall.
HDG: What fittings do you need?
Me: I don’t need fittings. I need glue.
HDG: Glue? Here… (handing me some all-purpose PVC glue)
Me: Will this be safe for ponds? …safe for fish?
HDG: Yeah… glue is all the same.
Me: Oh… er, thanks.

On the way home, I stopped at a garden center and went to their pond section. They had the pond glue. But of course I already bought the other stuff. Now I have to take it back. Dang.

'All the same', my eye!

I’ve gotten it all glued now. It just needs to cure overnight.
The Max is for scale.
