Requiem for a Cup

I have always used a Slim-Fast cup to mix my Carnation Instant Breakfast in. At first it was because of the 8 ounce mark on the side of the cup, but then it was because I had come to love the old cup. I would drink my Carnation, rinse the cup, and set it upside down on the edge of my sink. I have been using this beloved cup at least since 1993.

Yesterday morning I went to eat my two tablespoons of flax and drink my Carnation like usual. When I filled my Slim-Fast cup with milk, it bled all over the counter. One of the cracks in the brittle old plastic had finally broken through. The cup had become unuseable. Dang.

I will be field-testing replacement cups over the next couple of days. Maybe I can find something suitable at IKEA. But nothing will take the place of this cup in my heart.

Goodbye, dear cup.

Nooo!

You win for Best Reuse of Cup award! My eco-freaky heart salutes you, and mourns for your loss. 🙁

Not much sadder than the sight of “cup pee” in the morning. A moment of silence for your loss…

…and we totally understand the reverence to a time-tested old friend at this house. The best cup in the place for cold milk with cookies before bedtime is the yellow “Baltimore Lutheran High School” cup from my ’80’s tenure there. I usually let Thurman use that one, while I use the red ’90’s genre mug lacking the “high”…printed on it, that is (ahem). Just the thought of either of those two cups failing in their daily duties makes my eyes water (‘course, we all know that’s not much of a stretch anyway).

So what do you plan to use from here on out for the daily Instant Breakfast preparations? Tupperware used to make those graduated instant pudding shakers with snap on lids – have one of those? Wonder what Peggy uses………?

I use a large glass mug…I use twice the amt. of milk called for & I mix thoroughly. I also MUST drink it with a straw…if I’m out of straws & can’t find anything to use as a substitute straw…I don’t drink it that day.

(Note to self: next time we’re out of gift ideas for Peggy…..box o’ straws!)

This brings up –again– this dilemma: how to best honor a departed cup. Most people I’ve talked to agree that toasting the old cup is not appropriate (really any form of remembrance that involves the use of another cup seems to be frowned upon).

Perhaps some sort of wake, or memorial service? Do you know the religious views of your cup? Some drinking vessels leave behind specific instructions. Have you seen anything like that? How about anything that you could take as a sign of the cups last wishes?

    Just sayin’.

      HA!!

    • Curt

I think you can toast to the old cup by drinking directly out of the jug or container.

I hear Lloyd and Lauren have a great big hole dug under their hostas. Maybe you could lay it to rest there.

    • Peggy

Hehe…and I’m so glad that hole hasn’t been filled.

    • Deanne

I’m not sure Lauren would support that, if the cup can be recycled.

  5. Peggy

Sorry Brad. There are no words.

  6. Michele

Casey uses the same Slim Fast cup to mix her Carnation in the morning. When she heard your sad news she said, “Mr. Royuk can have MY cup.” 🙂 She didn’t even bat an eye!
I guess she knows how much it means to you. We can talk about the exchange once she realizes the extreme nature of her offer!

  7. Lauren

“Ha!” to all of you. You all funny.
