Welcome to Brad's online memory archives.

And So It Begins

Yesterday was my first full day back in my classroom. There have been a lot of people moving to new classrooms over the summer, but I am still in the same room. Yesterday’s task was arranging the furniture.

Last year I discovered that having the student desks face away from the door really cuts down on in-class distractions from people peeking in, so I left the student desks where they were. So I turned my attention to my own desk. I like to have a view of the hallway because I like seeing people. If they walk by and see me, they’re more likely to come in and interrupt me from work, which I love. So I had two choices: put my desk by the window in front of the student desks, or put it by the window behind the student desks. I chose behind, even though that’s the same place as last year. It’s nice to be able to watch the kids without them being able to watch me.

So I didn’t get a whole lot done, but give me a break. It was my first day back. I gotta take it slow.

I think this arrangement looks sort of cubist. It pleases my eye.

It looks so clean and fresh. Perhaps you could keep it that way and come up with a completely zen classroom. “There are no books, only knowledge.”

Liking when people come in and interrupt you from your work! I am in COMPLETE AGREEMENT! I love when that happens! šŸ˜€

    We must be related.

It depends on who is doing the interrupting. There’s a huge difference between say Brady coming in to tell a joke to my class and some kid coming in to tell me someone just threw up in the bathroom. Totally different!

Maybe you can take off the front side of the desk, making it two-sided, so that when you see a green-looking kid looking for an available teacher, you can move around to the other side of the desk and look very busy and unavailable.

I hate it, because they are usually not just interrupting what I’m working on, they are usually adding to the amount of work I have to do. I hate them all.

Exactly! (It’s not going well today.)

        • Beth

So. I won’t be stopping by with a beer and a candy bar this weekend.

          So noted.

          (Hope it gets better.)

The spirit of the gesture is duly noted, however! šŸ™‚

If I worked with you, my numerous interruptions would not be to give you more work…I would be asking you if there was anything I could help you with…and then I’d stay and chat for waaaaay too long…and on occasion I’d send you treats, but unfortunately they often need the following declaimer:

“The following snack contains graphic images that may be disturbing for young children or more sensitive co-workers. Parental discretion is advised.?

You were busy yesterday, at least for the few hours I was there. Carrying…moving…shopping in our on-campus store [aka the Field House of stored furniture from other places/campuses]. That’s from where I procured a cute little white used (but with low mileage) microwave oven for my classroom, and I saw the great shelves you found over there. Every school should have its own on-campus store, don’t you think? It’ll be fun having two new [formerly US] people in our building this year, although we’ll all be so flippin’ busy, I think, that we won’t really see them or one another all that often. “See that blur? That’s Mr. Royuk!” [Ah, the annual Rat Race! Hope this year the rats don’t win again…]

Room looks great Brad…a little barren, but great!
