Portrait

Yesterday was Memory Quiz Day in my Religion classes. I tell my students that after they finish their quiz, they should put it face down on their desk. I also say that if they want to write or draw on the back while they’re waiting for others to finish, that would be okay.

One of my sixth graders drew a portrait of me on his quiz. He showed it to me after he was done. I think it’s very interesting to see what an amateur drawing of you looks like, because without photographic drawing skills, people tend to draw caricatures. Your main features are exaggerated. You learn what thing draws peoples’ attention first.

So what do I see? I still have noticeable hair on the top of my head. I’m smiling. And I have a lot of eyelashes.

He forgot to draw a tie.

  1. Beth says:

And apparently, you have a very big head. But, hey! No unibrow!

    (Heh.)

  2. Lauren says:

And you look happy – that’s a good thing. Are those eraser marks or shadows from your chiseled cheekbones?

  3. Lloyd says:

I think you should consider wearing more to class.

  4. Karla says:

I never realized your nose was so pointy. That’s disturbing.

  5. Peggy says:

That is so sweet!! It looks just like you…I particularly like the flexing arms…they’re like incredible hulk arms that are so large you can’t put them down at your sides.

  6. Annette says:

So now, the paper is really face-up.

  7. Carol says:

I kinda hope this was drawn by a 6th grader. If, say, an 8th grader…well…I no longer feel so bad about my own artistic abilities [or lack thereof].

Yikes! Bad hair cut recently, Brad? [Hair seems noticeably shorter on your left side than the right.] I’m somewhat concerned for the blood circulation to the right side of your body – arm and leg seem exceptionally small-diametered. Has a medic been consulted about this yet? Let’s not even talk about the different shaped feet. Nice “arrow ears”, though! They’re almost aligned…

Seriously: this is quite a tribute. I think in the (insert horribly long time here) I’ve taught, nobody has ever even offered to capture my likeness for posterity. Congratulations, Mr. Royuk!
