Now a Burden

The fish tank in my dining room is dirty all the time. I don’t know if I used to clean it more often or if there is a serious biological imbalance or what. After I clean it, it looks good for a couple days. By the fifth day, it’s dirty looking. By the twelfth day or so, it looks like the picture below. I’m tired of cleaning it. I never look at it any more, even when it’s clean.

I seriously want to dismantle it, but then what? It’ll be another piece of useful junk that I don’t feel like I should throw away, but that I don’t want to sell because it’s too much of a hassle. So it continues to sit and look dirty.

What I need is a good accident that smashes it and requires me to throw it away.

The blurry orange things are fish. Stupid algae.

Say It…

Lately I have been spitting an awful lot while I’m teaching. The first time I noticed it, I spit on an eighth grade girl’s binder. She was very kind and surreptitiously wiped off the spit with some hand sanitizer. I knew what she was doing, but she didn’t know I knew. Michele told the girl I wanted to say something to her, so I did have a chance to thank her for her kindness.

Since then, I’ve spit several times with kids not noticing, and few times with them noticing. I’ve apologized when it was really obvious. I’ve been surprised at how generous they’ve been. But what the heck is going on? Why am I spitting so much? Perhaps I’ll look into getting sneeze-guards installed on the front row of desks.

Thhbpt!

New Season

Last night two of my shows had their season premiers. Yay! It’s been a weird last couple of weeks for me in regard to TV. I actually was getting really bored with it. The syndicated shows could keep me entertained until eight, then I would want to go to bed.

Last night at eight, I watched Bones, then Fringe. Both of them were fairly satisfying episodes. Bones avoided the romantic entanglement stuff that will eventually kill the show, but Fringe is getting closer and closer to the every-episode-is-connected-and-about-the-same-storyline problem. When it was episode-by-episode, it was fun. Now it’s all serious and world-ending. Dang.

As long as theyre just friends, the show will be okay.

New Penny

When did a new design for pennies come out and why wasn’t I told about it?

I was emptying my pockets and spotted a coin I’d never seen before. Upon looking more closely, I discovered it was a penny. With a log cabin on the back.

I wonder if they’re being made of an even cheaper metal than zinc now. Maybe it’s copper-plated dirt. Maybe I should bite one to see if I can dent it with my teeth. Or maybe not.

Under the cabin it says: 'E Pluribus Unum' and '1809'

A Skeleton in God’s Closet

While I was in Nebraska I got a book called “A Skeleton in God’s Closet” by Paul Maier. I had heard of it before, and saw it in the university bookstore while we were visiting my mom, and I needed something to read on my plane trip home, so I got it.

I just finished it last night, and I loved it. It feels similar to “The Davinci Code”, except the author knows something about Christianity and archaeology. I was captivated. It was a real page-turner for me. The story is about an archaeological discovery that threatens to destroy Christianity as a group of scientists struggle to make sense of the findings. I couldn’t wait for school to be over yesterday so I could get back to reading it.

I liked the book for its treatment of faith, the stuff I learned about archaeology (the author is an expert), and the fact that the heroes were smart people. I love it when the heroes are smart people. I feel smart right along with them.

Some people who reviewed it on Amazon didn’t like the dialog or the romantic subplot, but I didn’t feel that way. It’s a great read. I hereby make it an official bradaptation recommendation.

A good book.
