Time And Temperature

My neighbor, Hamilton Federal Bank, has a lighted time and temperature sign on it. Bulbs were burning out, so it looked a little sad. Then they turned it off completely, which was even more sad. I liked seeing the time and temperature. I think I’ll be a 24 hour Weather Channel watcher when I’m older.

But they got a new time and temperature sign! It’s a fancy, high-tech one. I’m so happy. Now I’ll always know what time it is! Last night as I was coming back from getting Chinese carryout, I took a picture. Thank you Hamilton Federal Bank! Thank you for telling me what time and temperature it is. You’re a great neighbor.

The sign is great! The Chinese food was not. My stomach felt weird.

Loose Change

My church has been doing its annual stewardship drive. They’ve been asking congregation members to make little speeches each Sunday to give different perspectives on money. My turn was this past Sunday. Since I was already thinking about it, I was moved to do a Middle School chapel about it. I had a couple different object lessons. One of them was about making regular, small contributions. I brought my pocket change jar to show how little bits over time can add up to a lot. The counter on the top of the jar said $153.09.

Right before chapel started, I dropped the jar. Even though it was made of plastic, it just couldn’t take the blow. It broke open and spilled all over the floor. Dang. My homeroom kids were very helpful in picking the change up. It left me a little discombobulated, though. And now I can’t just transport my change in that nice jar.

I put all the coins in a double grocery bag.

The Ravages of Age

On Monday I was in charge of wrestling practice. One of my favorite drills is monkey rolls. We hadn’t done them yet this year, so I wanted to demonstrate them. Instead of having some wrestlers from last year show everybody how to do it, I grabbed a couple of guys and did it with them. Some of the boys always have trouble doing this. They don’t move fast enough or they land on their feet instead of diving onto their hands. We got through it though.

Everything seemed to have gone okay until later that night, when I had a tightness in my shoulder. The tightness turned to an ache, and by the middle of the night, I had trouble propping myself up when it was time to make my middle-of-the-night bathroom visit.

My shoulder continued to be sore all day yesterday, but this morning it’s feeling pretty good, so I think the injury is passing. Am I old or something? I don’t remember ever having a joint injury. What’s next? A broken hip?

Good thing I don't use my left shoulder when I teach.

Thirty Thousand Miles

My odometer turned over to thirty thousand miles last night at 6:43pm. I was in my neighborhood coming back from having a quick bite to eat with Peggy, who was sharing some big news. The news was not that she’s pregnant. And it was not that she has leprosy. Good thing. What is standard etiquette for when someone tells you they have leprosy?

When I hit thirty thousand, I was on Cloville Road, which is a pretty sleepy side street, except for when there’s a big limousine on it. Someone there is a limo driver and sometimes parks his car in the street. Since it was quiet last night, I could stop for some pictures.

The odometer:
I'm ready to just hammer a nail through that tire pressure light so it will turn off.

And where I was when it turned to thirty thousand:
Good ol' Cloville. No limousines tonight.

Closer And Closer

My “Dinners for Eight” group from church may be coming to my house next. I say “may” because one of the couples called last night to say they couldn’t make it. Since there are only two couples and me in the group, I’ll have to reschedule. Since they may be coming, and since some of my family members are coming for Thanksgiving, I wanted to get the kitchen cabinets more finalized. The end-cap pieces have been leaning against the kitchen wall ever since my basement flood. Yesterday I finally got them on.

BEFORE:
It didnt look BAD bad.

AFTER:
But this looks so much nicer.

And since I never recorded their installation, here is a picture of the top trim (which I finished weeks ago already):
Nice finished look.

I have one more thing left to do before I make the decision to install or not install the toe-kicks: I have to put cover panels on the area above the stove. The problem is that I don’t want to wrap the trim around that area, so I just cut it flat. But it sticks out a little, and there is no laminate on the cut edge of the trim. Time to improvise! I cut some laminate off a scrap piece of trim, cut it to shape, and glued it on. Ta-da! I had to let the glue dry, then I’ll sand a little, and install the boards.

Any irregularities add to the charm and individuality of the garment.
