Dress? Athletic?

After school every day I change for wrestling practice. My standard outfit is: short-sleeved shirt, athletic pants, white socks, and sneakers. When I get to the practice room, I change into wrestling shoes. Because wrestling shoes are high-tops, I’ve found myself wishing I had tall white socks instead of the shorty socks I wear every day. Years ago, I bowed to the will of fashion and got rid of all my tall white socks. I loved tall socks. My most glorious pair was in seventh grade. They had five green stripes. Five!

Anyway, a few weeks ago I decided to just leave my dress socks on for wrestling practice. It seemed to work fine, and there was something between my wrestling shoes and my ankles. Ever since then, I’ve been wearing dress socks to wrestling practice. But I keep wondering if fashionable people are snickering behind my back for making such a decision. Is there a reason people wear athletic socks for athletics? I’ve already established that my feet don’t sweat. Is there any other reason?

I think I will continue to wear my dress socks for practice. It saves a little laundry time.

Standing on my classroom floor sock-footed always gives me a small case of the jibblies.

I was going to snicker until I saw that your shoes were black. I think that makes it more acceptable, especially since you are wearing long pants. Don’t trust me, though, since I am the least fashion-wise person I know.

Around here, the wrestlers all wear black socks with their wrestling shoes. Or shorty socks so it appears they wear no socks at all. So either way, you fit in here.

MD is like a whole other country though, so I don’t know where that leaves you…

      Hey!………..

–Merlin born and bread – er – bred – uh – raised?

Geez Brad, I don’t even know if I can admit to knowing you after learning this.

But seriously, I don’t know how you can stand shoes directly on your ankles. Do you have callouses? Blisters?

The black socks are fine! You’ll probably start a new trend…being ‘The Brad’ and all.

PS—What are those things in your school shoes on the heel part? Quarterish looking. It looks like they would be aggravating to the feet.

Maybe for your birthday I will get you long black athletic socks. You will be even more cool than you are now! (As if that is even possible :)!)

First of all, you should never throw anything away because of the whims of fashion. If you had just saved your fabulous, tall socks, you could be showing off those five green stripes right now. Well, those were probably long gone anyway.

Second, I totally agree with your choice of minimizing laundry. We should all be so wise.

FYI – I’ve been doing this for years. Hated changing from my dress socks into “athletic socks”, then having two pairs of dirty socks in one day. Sure, the girls all make fun (or compliment me on my aqua blue argyle socks) of me at tennis practice, what do I care? Also, Mr. Breite here does the same thing. Join the crowd, you’ll like it on the ‘dark side’.

I think the fact that you guys do it is an argument against me doing it, not for. 🙂
