Cold! Hot!

About two weeks ago, my hot water suddenly stopped being rocket-hot and just went to regular-hot. It was a pretty clear indication that my oil heat wasn’t working any more. The boiler is connected to my hot water heater, so in the winter the hot water out of the tap is hot enough to cook with.

So two weeks ago the boiler wasn’t working, but my little space heaters seemed to be doing a good job. It wasn’t that cold outside anyway. I never posted a picture I took of the camellia. It was blooming a several days ago! The last time it bloomed was November.

It's amazing, isn't it?

But lately, it’s been really cold. Over the course of several days, the temperature inside my house got colder and colder. Sitting on the living room couch required a blanket and a distance of one foot or less from the space heater. And it was really hard to get out of bed in the morning. My house was cooold. Yesterday I didn’t have wrestling practice, so I was home early. Turning on the heater reminded me to call the repair man:

Yikes!

After a very nice conversation with a helpful lady at PETRO, a repair man was on is way. A short while later he arrived. It was the “flame sensor”, whatever that is. The heat has been running all night, and now my house is blazing hot! Thank you, nice PETRO lady. Thank you, repair man. Thank you, Santa (if you had anything to do with this).

Creepy but warm.

What? No “Thank you, Easter Bunny!”??

Glad you and Max have thawed out! (How did Max fare through this time??) I never knew – didn’t notice any blue lips, etc., while you were at school. Bet your coffee pot was going in J-1 early and all day there for a while!

Now, if you had individual electric baseboard heat in your home, Brad, this would never be a problem. We have no boiler/furnace at all, so no middle-of-the-night explosion or pilot light snuffing concerns, for instance. Between passive solar energy, being of “good German stock” and the cat and dog building tiny fires throughout the house while we’re away, we’re usually comfortable enough…for Inuits…

You are not kidding about the creepiness of your boiler. I hope you haven’t been a bad bunny. (Veggie Tales, in case you think I’m just crazy.)

I hear snow is headed your way, so good thing you’ll have heat!

Wow-48%! Even I have to agree that that’s cold chilly…for inside! Glad to hear you’re toasty again.

Today is my birthday and it’s a big one — BOOOOOO!!!
    I hope I like being 25!

We had the same problem with our heater last winter! The flame sensor was dirty because our furnace is in the laundry room. Lint from the dryer gets it all nasty every 4 or 5 years.

Karla – which one are you: Calvin or Hobbs? (My husband’s fanorite cartoon strip, BTW)

      • Karla says:

I would have to say I’m Hobbs, if only for the fact that I’m tall. :)

I’m in charge of my department page on our company intranet (internal internet) and I have it all decked out in Calvin and Hobbs stuff. They’re so fun!
