Hunt’s and Heinz

I made the double recipe of Calico Beans last night. It was huge! It called for three cups of ketchup. I rarely have ketchup at home because the places I order food from always offer it for free. Since I was buying some, I decided to get a bottle of Heinz and a bottle of Hunt’s, because I’ve been curious for a long time about the difference. Here are my findings:

Hunt’s: smelled like vinegar, was quick to come out of the bottle, and tasted sweet. It reminded me of tomato soup.

Heinz: smelled like vinegar, was thicker, and tasted sharp and salty. It made me think of french fries.

In the end, I don’t think I would be able to tell which of the two I was using if I just got it from some restaurant. But Heinz tasted more familiar. Maybe more of the places I usually eat at use Heinz.

I think it was the first and second time I've ever eaten just a spoonful of ketchup.

Two spoonfuls of ketchup? Now that is good science! You have an incredible palate if you can discern those differences.

Post the recipe! Post the recipe!

I’m gagging thinking about taking 2 spoonsfuls of ketchup straight…(insert video of Ricky Gervais gagging in Ghosttown here) I would have had to do the test on some food.

And I second Post the recipe.

Did you love that movie or what? [I have yet to have that particular medical test that started all his troubles as a result of seeing that, by the way...]

“Just a spoon – ful of ketchup helps the cal-i-co go down…the cal-i-co go doowwwwwwn, cal-i-co go down…”

While by 2pm a few key elements of the awesome luncheon were completely gone, I did get to sample and enjoy the beans – and I finally “get” why they’re called that! Cool…

Nicely done…and if I caught you correctly out of the corner of my eye at day’s end, nice purple crayon attire today!
