Building a Firepit

I’ve finished building the firepit. Building the walls only took a few hours – much less time than all the previous steps. Digging the bamboo roots out took forever. I think I spent three days on that. Laying the flagstone pavers took two days. Building the firepit walls? Just a few hours.

I prefer dry-stacking the stones. I like the natural look. Fitting them together in a solid wall takes a little time. It felt like a puzzle to me. I enjoyed it a lot. The finished structure won’t fall over on its own, but it could be pushed over. I needed more rocks to make it unbreakable, but I ran out. Maybe I’ll find more on Craigslist. It should only be a matter of time. I now have a serious addiction to looking at the ‘free’ section of the classifieds. 🙂

Here are some pictures of the firepit. I haven’t burned anything in it yet. I need to get some marshmallows first.

Here’s the ‘before’ picture one more time:
My pictures in the morning are foggy-looking.

And the after:
Im not finished landscaping around the area.

Its bigger than I thought it would be. For scale, the flagstone pavers are two feet by two feet.

Magnificent!!! Oh, the fires you’ll have! ( And also more nights going to bed smelling like smoke and bug spray. 🙂 )

Are the grey rocks (on the left in the second photo) going around this area? What are your chair options? Are you just going to burn some of the stuff in your house for fuel? So many questions……

I think the seating should be colorful beanbag chairs that complement your garden!
    Excellent job sir!

[Don’t let any local natives see picture #3 – that looks very inviting as a potential spot for animal or very-small-human emolation (sp), don’t ya’ think? ]

So I’ve been meaning to ask: did you ever check with the great city of Baltimore – city of obscure laws and rules and all – to be sure you could actually have and use said fire pit…now that you’ve built one…and everything?

Well, you can always rent it out as a sacrificial altar then, I guess …

I actually called the fire department, but they didn’t answer their phone, so I figured they didn’t care.

        Ha!!

Oh, I wouldn’t necessarily assume that. They were undoubtedly out at a fire when you called. In fact, didn’t I hear that someone’s fire pit got out of control and entire blocks of homes were effected? Ahem.
