King and Queen Seat

Denis saw that there was a barbecue festival in Belair yesterday and wanted to go. Since it was up by Peggy, we asked if she wanted to join the fun. She did. The festival was fun. The focus was, of course, food. I was glad to see that they had lemonade there… you know the kind where they squeeze a lemon into it and put a bunch of sugar in and shake it? It was awesome. The barbecue was good too, but I could have made a meal of just lemonade. I should try that sometime.

After we left the festival, Peggy suggested we visit Rocks State Park and see the King and Queen seat. It’s a 190 foot high cliff that was purportedly used for indian ceremonies. You can drive right up to where it is, then a short walk gets you to the cliff. And then you can walk to the edge. There is no railing, no wall, no rope or chain… just the cliff and empty air. Denis went almost all the way out to the point. Peggy walked calmly to the narrow area. I stayed behind. I’m afraid of heights.

But I was determined to go out farther. Denis and Peggy cleared out while I inched my way along. Here’s as far as I got before my legs felt like they might give way:

I felt less sick when I looked down at my feet.
*No one was harmed in the making of this post. Except some lemons.

Gosh, I haven’t been there in ages! Thanks for going for me and taking a snapshot to remind me why I wouldn’t have been able to really enjoy that visit to the “thrones” any more either. My steadiness on ladders, etc., has suffered with age, and I fear my reticence to just jog on out to the edge of a precipice might surface there, too. …although, I didn’t seem to have trouble in early July on the 60′ cliffs of basalt overlooking the Pacific ocean on which the aunt and uncle’s condo community in Oregon is built. They didn’t have railings absolutely everywhere either. [Now that I think on it, it’s a miracle I made it home, isn’t it?] Sure was a pretty day to go rock climbing, though, and I’m glad that “freshly-squozen” lemonade was the high point of your day. Now the true test of your Baltimorean-ness: do you also enjoy half-lemons with peppermint sticks inserted in the middle? I used to live for those as carnivals and street fairs. Now they are practically impossible to find.

It’s funny you should mention those peppermint stick lemons. There was a girl eating one of those yesterday and I was wondering why. Peppermint and lemon? It sounds gross to me.

      • Carol

No – they’re very refreshing in the heat of the summer (which, I do believe, we’ve had plenty of this year, thank you very much!) There has to be that tiniest of holes running the length of the peppermint stick through which the lemon juice gets sucked up. Passing through the stick provides just enough sweetness to make the lemon palatable, I think. Try one once and let us know what you think. Then you will truly be. A. Baltimoron.

Is that Peggy’s head in the lower left?

good one…I had to go back and look!

    • Peggy

I had to go back & look too! HA!

If you make a meal of lemonade, add cayenne pepper and maple syrup (I think). It’s supposed to have magical properties. I heard it from Beyonce’, so it must be true.

I would totally go out and sit on that seat. Then I’d accidentally fall of.

I’m not afraid of heights. I’m afraid of dying. Not death, mind you. Just the dying part.

    • Lloyd

I would be more worried about the off chance that I might not die.

    • Carol

      I’m with ya’ there, kiddo…both parts…

    • Carol

I totally “get” ya’ there, lady…

  5. Peggy

You were such a Brave Eagle!! I’m pretty sure I heard the echo of ghostly tribal cheers & applause amongst the trees as you made your way out.

For the record I only made it to the same rock you’re standing on, but I did face the scenic view…Denis went to the spot where the shadow is in the picture…at the very pointy spot. Amazing Denis!

What you don’t see Nebraskians, are the rocks that we crawled over to get to that spot. HUGE, slanty boulders. It was no easy feet…especially for people our age! 😉

    • Peggy

      easy feat…

      • Carol

Well…no…the “feet” usage probably wasn’t all that easy either, was it? I’d say you were fine the first try, Peggy.

  6. Peggy

PS THANKS for the giant lemonade Denis…I owe you one!!!

  7. Peggy

AND I would have never climbed up on the ledge Denis was on to take the picture in this post! I was most nervous about that!

  8. Kristi

Did you throw a rock off the top just to see how long it would take to get to the bottom?

  9. Peggy

Hey…somebody caught Brad’s climb on video tape!
