Shrinky Dinks

While at the craft store, my eye happened to fall on a package of Shrinky Dink film. I could hardly believe it. They still make that? Awesome! I had to buy some. When I was a kid, I LOVED Shrinky Dink film. I traced superheroes out of Brent’s comic books, colored them, then shrunk them to amazing smallness and hardness.

I had trouble deciding what to do with my new acquisition. My comic books are all kind of inaccessible right now. What could I trace? I went poking around and stumbled upon the art Brent gave me that looks like Max. I traced it and colored it with colored pencils. But it didn’t seem like I could cut it out. The tail and paw pieces would be so thin.

But I had to do something that was cut out. I’ve drawn flowers before, so that’s what I settled on. I looked at the picture of my beautiful orange and pink hibiscus and sketched and colored it. Then I cut it out.

Behold the amazing transformation of Shrinky Dinks!

BEFORE
I didn't put baby powder on the foil like they suggested. I should have.

AFTER
The smell when they bake is a strong memory.

You have a strong future in Shrinky-Dink jewelry-making to sell at a booth on the Fourth!

I did this once with my preschoolers, only we used permanent markers on (recycled) clear plastic cups, and then shrunk them in a toaster oven. (It was a stolen idea.) Beautiful, but we couldn’t do too many inside – the smell was pretty strong.

I didn’t remember that they shrunk down that far. You should make little portraits of yourself to give out as prizes to students who have been especially good in class.

I LOVE shrinky dinks too!! Where did you get the sheets? (nr) Oh dear, you’ve set off the urge to color & shrink in me!

I remember making Speed Racer, Gazoo, Charlie Brown & gang. Plus Peggy originals. (& yes, I was older when they came out…me & my friend would steal borrow sheets from her little sister.)

The flower is gorgeous!! I’m with Lauren…these would sell!

I got them at JoAnn’s Fabrics store. I also saw them in Michaels. They’re in with the craft kit stuff. The Shrinky Dink kits are crazy-expensive, but they sell just packages of sheets, and they’re cheap.

I think you can also just shrink plastic film from take-out containers. The internet says if it has a ’6′ in the recycle symbol, it will work just like Shrinky Dinks. Only problem is that it usually is smooth, and if you want to write on it with colored pencils you have to sand it first. Sheesh! That’s too much work. Sorry, earth. Sorry, Lauren.

You could cut a hole in them and make little charm bracelets. Girls would love to buy them from you.

That is a great flower, by the way.
