Winter Break

At my school, Spring Break is always the week after Easter. Since Easter is so late this year, we have a “Winter Break” scheduled. It was a four day weekend, but one of the days has become a make-up day for snowdays. Yesterday was our Winter Break. And it was 70 degrees. Ha!

I worked in the garden almost all day long. I was out there by 8am and was finishing up around 3pm. It… was… AWESOME! I was mostly doing cleanup. I picked up trash (I couldn’t believe how much there was!), I cleared up leaves, pruned dead stems, and poisoned weeds. Just when I thought I was too tired to continue, I saw something else that needed some attention and had a new flush of energy. It was great!

I don’t know that I’ve ever been this far ahead of things this early. I’m very excited about it. This cleanup work will make my spring garden look much better. Come on, April! Come on, May! I’m ready for the explosion of flowers!

Pruning lavender is a great-smelling job!

And here’s the March garden movie. It’s a little more shaky than usual.

Wow – your grass is even green!

Ha! The pumelo spot looks like a grave. Will you leave it open for future garden pests?

You cannot kill a dragon lily. You can only make it stronger.

I really like these videos! It’s been cool watching your garden change over the year, and I can’t believe I, a plant-phobe, am saying that.

Your daffodils are TALL! Holy cow.

Mine just this week peeked through, so they’re only about an inch out of the ground. Clearly you’re in a warmer zone than I.

Is the fence between you and the bank yours or the banks?

    • Brad

Technically, the first four or five feet on my side the fence is their property. The previous owner had two junked cars in the back yard and told the bank that if they paid for the fence, he’d put it up. I think they were glad to mask the wreckage. I keep trying not to plant anything I care about in that strip of land, in case they ever want to reclaim it.

Yay for winter breaks that you can spend outside in shorts!!

And I too have learned alot thru your videos! And I can see why you like gardening so much….it’s so cool to see the miraculous sprouts of everytthing! Even I get excited watching! If it just wasn’t so much darn work, maybe I’d attempt gardening. Maybe.

btw: My hibiscus is still alive! 2 years old! That is definately a record for me! When should I put it outside? When will I know if my banana survived?

    • Brad

They say Mother’s Day is the safest time to put frost-tender plants out around here. I usually push it, though. Once nighttime temps are consistently above 50 degrees, the hibiscus will survive outside.

Banana trees are slow to sprout. If there’s nothing by mid-May, it didn’t survive. If your tree didn’t make it, I will have a TON of pups to give you if you want them.

Banana pups? Great. That didn’t put me off eating bananas At. All.

        • Brad

Would it help to hear that I kill all the pups I don’t give away?

          • Lauren

            *sniffle*
