A Shortage of Ghost Shrimp?

Yesterday was a planned day off from school for Labor Day Weekend. In spite of all my previous time off, I hadn’t gotten my school plans together, so I decided I would go in to school to plan lessons and get it out of the way.

But before I went to school, I wanted to go to the aquarium store. I’ve been wanting to get some ghost shrimp for my classroom aquarium. They are really just meant to be food for large aquarium fish, but they’re so weird and fun, I get them every once in a while for aquarium entertainment.

But I couldn’t find any. The store closest to my school was out of them. I called other stores. Nope. Finally, I called House of Tropicals. It’s kind of far from me, but it’s an astounding aquarium store. And they had ghost shrimp! Woo hoo! But they only had 30. I wanted more like 100. I asked the guy why nobody currently had ghost shrimp available. He didn’t know. It remains a mystery.

They're hard to see in this picture because they're clear. They are, after all, called 'ghost' shrimp.

They also had an albino version of the White Cloud Mountain Minnows I keep in my tank. I decided to get a few. After putting them in the tank, they didn’t look a whole lot different from the regular kind. But at least I added some new genetic stock…

See how the one in the middle of the picture is lighter?

It’s like an otherworldly Where’s Waldo? When I looked at the first picture I could only sort of see one, then another, then another, then…. another? Are there four in that picture or is my computer screen haunted?

I think there are just three. I took a bunch of pictures and this one was the best. The camera had a heck of a time focusing on the shrimp.

Yea, I hear that can happen when spirits walk in front of a camera. The lens can’t quite…………………oh…………………what?……………………….never mind then.

Nice clean aquarium, by the way.

Will any of your fish try to eat the ghost shrimp? Will the ghost shrimp survive on fish food or will they soon be skeleton ghost shrimp?

I once had a small cool looking little fish aquarium that was home to a black molly & a white molly. I loved them two! But now I wonder if I had really bought a black molly & an albino molly. Off to the internet. Either way, the mollies didn’t last very long. 🙁

PS Did you ever try salt water fish? I’m thinking that may just the thing I’m looking for to like my living room again.

      1) The fish will not eat the ghost shrimp. They’re bigger than the fish.
      2) The ghost shrimp are scavengers. They eat anything. Including fish food.
      3) There are such things as non-albino, white mollies. It’s a little surprising they died. They should be pretty tough fish. But they like a little salt in their water.
      4) If all you have is fish, and no coral or anything, salt water tanks aren’t too much more complicated than freshwater tanks. But more frequent water changes are helpful. We could talk about it sometime if you want.

    3) I like a little salt on my fish, so that works out nicely.
