The Third Type

I get ants in my kitchen periodically. I have noticed there are at least three different types. The first type is the one I see all the time; they are small ants with proportionate heads and bodies. They eat the poison I put out for them with great gusto and are gone in three days. The second type is very tiny and by the time I put poison out for them, they have already disappeared on their own. The third type are still small ants, but their heads are disproportionately large. When I squish one against the counter top, I really have to press hard to crush its head. These third-types like savory food. They go for chips or bullion cubes. When I put poison out, they will eat it, but they don’t die right away. They keep coming back for more day after day after day. It’s a little scary.

I have the third type in my kitchen now. I’ve been feeding them poison for a week. I hope it’s not just making them stronger…

Eat! Eat!

I read at wired that there is a household ant collection project. Perhaps one of those is a new species!

I have to say, with that title and those introductory sentences, I was more than a little afraid to read about what the third type of ant was like. This would make an excellent horror film. Change all your pronouns to ‘he’ and imagine Don LaFontaine reading it. Chills!

Do you ever worry that when you crush them the jagged edge of their oversized cranium will puncture your flesh and introduce ant DNA into your cells?

      Now he will.

I think the correct scientific name for the third type is THEM!

All that ant poison is obviously going to their heads, causing their brains to swell and learn new ways to thwart you. [Maybe they were the prototype for Brain of Pinky and the Brain?] Seems to be working, too. Better your kitchen than mine…
