Apple Wrap

I have settled into a new pattern for lunch. I still do two packets of Carnation (because it’s so quick and easy to pack and eat), but I also eat one apple and one banana. It seems to be enough to keep me from being hungry. Until around 4:30 or 5:00, when I desperately want to eat something.

When I was having those weird gum problems, I had to cut my apple because biting into it caused terrible pain. I was packing my daily apple slices in zip-close sandwich bags. But it seemed like such a waste. I would use each bag once, then throw it away. I ran out of bags the other day and was trying to figure out what to do.

As I searched through the kitchen, and stumbled across the Press-and-Seal. It seemed like a great alternative. It’s cheaper and it makes less trash.
It stays tightly wrapped.

And as a bonus, it can serve as a cutting surface for the slicer:
No counter to wipe; no cutting board to rinse.

And do we have a favorite kind of apple? I am partial to Fujis, Honey Crisps, and/or Galas. Many other kinds are too “mealy” for my taste. Do you schmear anything onto your slices? I am partial to peanut butter myself – really makes a single apple feel like an entire meal. Good for you for eating healthy stuff, sir! (But don’t go completely crazy and ditch the Dunkin Donuts on us now. You know I depend on those to get through my work week …)

I like all the kinds of apples you list. I am continuing to have good luck finding crisp apples, which is really weird, because I used to always say that picking mealy apples is a superpower of mine.

I don’t put anything on the apples. I’m not sure, but I think any kind of unhealthy or heavy food during the day gives me an acid stomach. At night, I can eat almost anything I want. I don’t understand why there’s a difference between day and night, but as long as I can avoid the burning, I don’t really care.

Cool! I am a fan of Press-and-Seal. Those sticky dots are magical!

If you want to go even more eco-freaky (and I know you don’t), here’s a story: Yesterday I was helping the school-agers, and we had Jazz apples for snack. (A gala-like apple) I cut each kid’s apple with that gadget, but not all the way through – I left the skin at the bottom, slid the peeler back up, folded the apple back together and handed it to them. It was fun – they held the apple and broke off each piece as they ate it. The other teacher said that she heard you can put a rubber band around it that way and take it for lunch and it won’t turn brown.

But then… juice might leak all over… so you should wrap it in something….. like Press-and-Seal… never mind….

Hehe… I tried to avoid language that might give you an eco-attack. I have a plastic container that I got from a carry-0ut place that holds one apple pretty well. I was going to start using it each day, but the first day I used it, I left it at school. I finally remembered to take it home last night, but this morning I forgot I had it, so I used Press-and-Seal again.

Press-N-Seal is cheaper? I always thought it was more expensive….but I too LOVE the stuff! And YAY for your healthy habits! It may just rub off on me. Here’s hoping!

(Btw: When I read the title, I thought “Oh boy! A new delicious snack idea…what did he wrap the apple with? Chocolate? Something cinnamony? Biscoff Spread?)

I’ve avoided Press’n’Seal because of the cost. Perhaps I shall have to revisit this item; it seems to have become cheaper.
