Create-A-Bed Murphy Bed: Day Five

It feels like I’m running out of steam. I seem to be getting less and less done. Yesterday I was going to start by mounting the door knockers on the bed legs. But I needed shorter screws than the ones I had. Off to Home Depot. I got two sizes. Neither of them worked. By then I only had two hours before it was time to Skype into my sister’s college class. Time enough to get other screws? Nah…

After Skyping, it was time to get back to work. But I had an oil change appointment in an hour and a half. Was there time to get the screws? No, I’d get them on the way back after the oil change.

So I started working at 5. Bible study was at 7. Not much time. But I did at least get the legs mounted. There were surprisingly few problems. I had to shim the hinges a little, but everything seems to be in good working order.

So here’s what the legs look like when the bed is in the “up” position.
Its looking good.

Here is one leg up, one leg down, for comparison.
The hinges work very smoothly.

And here’s a closeup of a leg in the “open” position.
It stays open like this as you open the bed.

I’d say that’s pretty good for one day. Stupid hardware. I went to Menard’s last night and the one thing I was excited to buy two of – they had one. Grrrrrr. I hate return trips…..

Can’t wait to hear how the Skyping went! Beth says the students always enjoy that – a look into what a real teacher is doing in the classroom.

Lovely! Until I saw the blocks of wood onto which those knockers were munted I wondered how they are going to stay perpendicular to the floor, much less support the rest of the bed weight – now I get it. Again I say: You.R.A.Genius…

Important question: will there be a decorate door-like enclosure when you are all done – something that says perhaps “behind these doors lies and entertainment center, or a wet bar or a <strike. den of iniquity library”? That would really set things off nicely – but it sounds like you’ll need more time than this weekend to do somethng that big or decorative. Hang on – only a few more weeks until summer break now!

I haven’t decided the final look completely yet. I think I need to see it assembled first. Then I can decide on trim and hardware.

Oh you’re getting plenty done! You are on spring break remember…..you need a little down time. I think yestereday was a good balance of project work, appts. & relaxing. Nothing to feel bad about at all.

Be extra careful today while working, what with it being Friday the 13th and all. Disappearing to another dimension while flipping up that bed might be fun, but sawing the wrong thing in half…..not so much.

…althought it might be cool to add your arm to my severed body parts collection.

These posts make me feel bad, because I find them very interesting, but I never have anything to say for a comment.

I just hope they aren’t getting tedious. I wanted to write all these back-to-back in case someone who wanted to use this kit stumbled across one of these posts – that way they could just go forward or backward to see the progression.

Of course, I’m missing all kinds of other post-writing opportunities in the meantime, dang it. It seems like all the good material hits at the same time.
