Light Dark Light

I got out my Christmas tree yesterday. It is a beautiful pre-lit tree that has fuzzy tips on the the artificial pine needles that make it look like a fir tree. It also has pinecones. It’s very natural looking. I love it.

But when I set it up, there was a band of lights that didn’t light up. Isn’t this the Sum of All Fears with pre-lit trees? That some of the lights don’t work? I tried to fiddle with them, but it was night time, and the light wasn’t too good. Hopefully in the daylight I can find an extra plug or loose bulb or something. They wouldn’t use the one-light-goes-out-they-all-go-out lights on a pre-lit tree, would they? That would be perverse.

There's no hiding it. It goes all the way around.

Oh, yes they would, those evil manufacturers of easy-to-care-for holiday decor! grrrrrr

You know we leave a 4′ tree with white lights and seasonal decor up all year in our living room, just changing the hang ons to suit the month (e.g., seashells in summer). Of course, the center string of lights will go out right after a re-decorating session, and who has time then to undo and redo?! I feel your pain.

…and good luck changing the bulbs. At least two sockets on current strings on our tree simply will not light any bulb we put into them – good, bad, new, old, or ugly. Yet, we have to keep something in the socket to avoid flame potential. Not fun….

I have a friend who said that she bit the bullet last year and bought a pre-lit tree. This year half of it was unlit when she put it up. When she contacted the manufacturer – since it was still under warranty – they sent her a string of lights. Not cool.

Those little 2-foot trees I used to put out in front of our house always had bum lights, so I would just pack a new string on and not take off the old one. Eventually they are going to be light cones with a tree core.

Wait…isn’t that how all Christmas trees are supposed to look?

(I have a little pre-lit tree on my end table in my living room and there are at least 2 regular strands of lights on it. I doubt that’s an option for you….so good luck finding the culprit that caused the darkness!)
