Welcome to Brad's online memory archives.

Jack’s Inn

I went to a rummage sale at school yesterday morning. I found a giant drink pitcher I can use for juice or powdered milk. I also found a printer that I might be able to make functional at home if I can find the necessary cables. After the rummage sale, I went to Costco and got a membership, then found out they don’t have Carnation Instant Breakfast. Dang. But they had other stuff I will buy. But I didn’t buy any of it yesterday.

I drove around looking for some thrift stores and only actually went in at Goodwill, where I got some pants. I was suddenly hungry and really needed food. I asked Siri for some restaurant suggestions. One of them was Jack’s Inn. It was close by, and the Internet seemed to like it.

I liked the outside. Very non-pretentious.

Outside and inside looked like a small Nebraska diner to me. They serve breakfast all day. Their other food is all local favorites. At first, I asked for banana pancakes, but their bananas were all green still, and unavailable for pancaking, so instead, I ordered Saimin. It’s a noodle broth soup that, according to the Internet, is popular in Hawaii. I can see why. It was really tasty. The noodles had a nutty flavor. Apparently, they are made with barley. I ate the whole bowlful.

Barley noodles, salty broth, pork.

I am going back for sure. I still have to try the banana pancakes. I also have to try a barbecue meat dish I saw on someone else’s table. It’ll be hard to get there too often, though. They’re only open from 6am to 2pm, Monday through Saturday. Maybe it could just be my Saturday eating place. Mmmm…

Good job on all the finds at the rummage sale/swap meet/tag sale/what DO Hawaiians call that anyway?

Barley (and cinnamon and a few other essentials I can’t recall right now) is supposed to help maintain consistent blood sugar levels, so rock on, saimin! (That does look a lot like an oriental soup with pork strips I always enjoy when I eat Chinese.)

That Siri – it didn’t occur to me she would have had to make the trip with you as well – she was okay with the move? 😉 Apparently she knows the entire planet well ya.

Hooray! You are finding all the local eateries! When I listen to The Splendid Table there is a couple who comes on who are experts at finding these kinds of diners. Their website is RoadFood.com. I think you should offer to be their Hawaiian correspondent!

Also, I am fairly certain that we might be able to find the cables you need down in the basement. Text Lloyd later.

So there’s no CIB on the island? What have you been having for breakfast??? Did you buy the other stuff that might work?

And that soup looks warm & soothing & healing. Ahhhhh….I wish I could throw my head right in the bowl!

Another nice day on the island!

The grocery stores carry CIB, so I’ve been having it for breakfast since I got here. But it’s going to cost me more now, because I can only get it in boxes of 10.
