The cultural differences of living in a new area is the best part of the whole experience. On Valentine’s Day, one of the kids was handing out candy, and she called them “suckers”. I had always called that candy “suckers” too, but in Baltimore everyone calls them “lollipops”. I had successfully trained myself to say “lollipops”, and here they’re called “suckers”! Ha!
Yesterday was another fun one. I was having the kids draw a picture of a vision from Jeremiah chapter one. It was an almond tree. The kids asked what an almond tree looked like. I said it looked a lot like a peach tree. Blank looks. I said peach blossoms looked an awful lot like cherry blossoms. Blank looks. Hmmm… I thought. What tropical trees do I know that look like almond trees? Nothing came to mind. I just told them to wing it.
My favorite was this one, because it was the most imaginative:
There were also more conventional submissions. This was a nice one:
Ha! That is a great palmond tree! (Sorry – it was too easy.)
Ha! …. and easy for you maybe! You funny!
I laugh just thinking about the blank stares. And I just love the 2 little almonds on the 1st tree … unless they’re newlywed honeybees.
