Lahaina Pali

I went hiking yesterday. My co-worker Paul was my guide. At first, we tried to go to Iao Valley. I wanted to hike in rainforest. But wouldn’t you know, it was raining. So instead, we went to Lahaina Pali, which, as it turned out, was a desert hike.

Here is the trail head:
Paul drove.

The trail was very rocky and twisty. It used to be the only way from Makawao to Lahaina. I’m astounded that people used to ride horses on this path.
Steep.

As we rose, we could see more of the valley. We were on the West Maui Mountains. Across the way was Haleakala. In between was Kihei:

I did a panoramic picture at this spot. Click HERE to see it.

We could also see Kahului on the way up. Kahului is a stopping point for cruises, so there is often a ship in dock. It’s taller than most of the buildings in Kahului.

The trail goes all the way up the ridge, then back down again. We stopped at the top, then turned back. The top of the ridge has windmills on it. I could see why. The wind is CRAZY strong. In fact, yesterday it was so strong that the windmills were not spinning. If they go too fast, they burn out or something. Here’s me at the place where we turned around. I was clutching my hat and water bottle so they wouldn’t blow out of my hands.

I did a panoramic picture at the top too. See it HERE

Thank you for the visual aid for today’s earth science class reviewing alternative energy sources. I know some student has asked if the wind were particularly viscious coudl that be bad for wind turbines – now I know an answer!

Gorgeous! Hawaii really does have it all: rainforests, deserts, and wind! That photo of Kahului with the ship is so interesting – it really gives a sense of scale. Although maybe not really since a cruise ship is like a humongous hotel, just on the water.

Awesome hike! I love that you can get up high and see far away, we really can’t do that in Maryland. I miss that about Wisconsin, except, you don’t actually have to get up high.

And I can’t get over all the totally different types of geography there are on that one little island! Thanks for sharing them with us! Btw: Your eyes look somewhat like my dog’s when he sticks his head out the window of my moving car.
