The middle school band from our school is in Oahu this weekend for a band festival. They left yesterday morning before school. Since over half of the middle schoolers were gone, we took the remaining students to a local park for a day of physical activities and fun.
We walked to the park. It was about a 20 minute walk. There were a ton of things to do there. I enjoyed watching some of the kids slide down a big hill on a boogie board that a student had brought.
There were lots of different games happening… some soccer, some catch. There was even a demonstration of the crane technique from “Karate Kid”.
After a little while, we moved to the tennis courts, where Paul taught the kids a game that was a cross between tennis and volleyball. It was really fun.
We had lunch at the tennis courts, then headed for the pool. It’s a community pool that is free. Isn’t that weird? I kept saying how weird it was, but nobody else thought so. Don’t pools usually charge or require membership or something? This is paid for by the county.
Anyway, it was fun to swim after all that activity. The water was a little cold, but if you kept moving, it wasn’t that bad.
What a fun day! I was very tired afterward. Whew! I slept like a log last night.
I have to say that it seems like Hawaiian living is much more active than anywhere else. Those kids – boogie boarding on a hill? Actually doing the crane thing? Then swimming? I marvel that the school-age children at the center like to talk about those ‘tough guy’ games, but if they have to go outside in the cold, many of them whine, and I wonder if they could actually do push-ups.
I’m sending them your way to toughen them up.
Field Day Hawaian Style – love it! [No teacher three-legged races, though?] How many of the staff such as yourself were left behind while the instrumentalists hit the other island? When do you hear how the band made out? I’m just full of questions today, including why we never turned the
DomeField House into an indoor swimming pool here?!The band festival only involves the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. All the other grades had class as usual. There were four of us teachers on this field trip. There were about 25 kids. No news from the band kids yet. They come back tomorrow.
I laughed out loud at the crane technique picture. That is priceless!
And how nice to be able to cool down after all that activity! And it is remarkable that the pool is free. Maybe it’s because you’re all floating over there in a giant swimming pool…although that pool has critters.
