Familiar

Last night was choir practice night. As I came into church at the beginning of practice, I stopped first in the bathroom. There is a distinctive smell in the bathroom. It’s not a bad smell – after all, the people who use that bathroom are very small (the preschool meets in the church).

It’s a wood smell and paint smell mixed together, but also has a hint of age. The place it reminds me of is just on the edge of remembering. It’s something from my childhood. Some place in my grade school perhaps? Maybe some relative’s house in Nebraska?

I’m really curious now… What does it smell like? Perhaps I’ll have to go in and smell it again.

A happy ocean scene on the stall doors.

Speaking as someone with an ocean phobia, that bathroom is terrifying. Did they also paint sharks in the toilets? (If I were brave, I would post a link to an elevator I saw that is mural-ized to look like you’re in a shark cage. I would perish instantly.)

The smell is probably mildew. You’re probably remembering it from our bathroom.

…just on the edge of remembering. HA! That’s my MO!

Good luck remembering the smell! Isn’t it funny how we remember smells. I love when I smell a smell that reminds me of childhood. Old wood reminds me of a church I used to go to. I can smell it now just thinking about it.

While you’re tyring to remember, saying this might be fun:

‘Of all the smells I have ever smelt, I never smelt a smell that smelt like that smell smelt.’

I think you’re safe in not associating any good bathroom smells with the boys’ washroom at youknowwhich middle school, yourknowwhere, Maryland. I doubt anyone who’s ever entered there has spoken the words “It’s NOT a bad smell.”

…but maybe that’s what the stall walls need – murals! Ocean waves on red walls, though…guess one would have to go for something more graphic, gory, blood-curdling…perhaps involving sharks!

I distinctly remember walking into the bathroom there once and smelling a chocolate cake smell.
