Pens and Prostration

My grading pen almost made it to the end of the year. Almost. We have a week and a half of school left, and as I was grading yesterday, my orange grading pen ran out of ink. I switched to pink.

I had to change the grade because I decided to accept two possible answers for one of the questions.

After grading for a chunk of the day, I came home for some down time. When I spend time in my living room, I don’t use my inflatable couch. It feels kind of unstable. Instead, I recline on the living room floor. It’s actually pretty comfortable. I use a cylindrical pillow Lauren sent me, and spread a blanket to soften the itchy carpet.

I put a cat picture on the computer, but it didn't show up.

[Only a week and a half left! WUH?! Not only did you get to teach in Paradise this semester, you’re apparently done weeks before us. Grrrr….Now please don’t say there are no teacher meetings at the end of the year; I might not be responsible for my actions.]

Just a question: when you ask students to write, do you restrict the colors they may use for any work they’re going to turn in to be graded? I always have given three options: pencil, blue ink or black ink. This year has presented the worst challenges for me – me with the umpteen color grading pens winds, needing to switch colors mid-paper when a student picks up, say, an orange gel pen to finish an assignment. When I surveyed my peers on this topic, the responses ran from “Me, too!” to “I gave up that fight long ago.” Apparently, I am one of the few Meanies who actually docks points for what appears to be passive aggressive resistance to this after repeated oral reminders (it’s in the syllabus but, hey, who read those before signing them anyway?). I wouldn’t care really – some of the colors are rather pretty – but when my grading matches their original work it opens a door I’d rather not go through, ya’ know?

Come quickly, June! (Hmmm…this looks like a variation on an Ascension message from late last week…)

My students use pencil or dark colored ink. Most of them have come up through the lower grades at school and have been used to the requirement.

I am impressed that it is possible to possess a pen long enough for the ink to run out.

Your laying-about setup actually looks pretty comfortable. Pillow, breezy door, t.v. and computer within arms reach – good night!

It’s about time you got on board with a pink pen….what with pink being the official color of Maui!
