Home Cooked Meal

In my stripped-down apartment, I haven’t been doing much cooking. There are several restaurants in walking distance, and even more just a short drive away. It’s been fun trying new places and visiting ones I already like.

Last night I prepared a meal. It’s one I really like: Cheese, crackers, fruit, and sausage-like meat. Mmm… I had a delicious Asian pear from the Korean grocery store. They were so cheap there! I was shopping for the other ingredients at Target. The only meat I could find was pepperoni. It wasn’t as good as summer sausage, but it was ok.

Co-Jack cheese. Mild and tasty.

So now you seem to be living a very European-style life. “Just a bit of fruit and cheese while sitting by the vineyard.” (Um, can you tell that I’m not that familiar with the European lifestyle?)

If you ever want cheap eats, I’ve been eating my way through a dozen Banquet Turkey Dinners. Yep, 88 cents and a few minutes of microwave time and dinner. is. on.

Congratulations on a well-balanced (ok, so there are no veggies – big whoop), satisfying and inexpensive meal! 🙂

The other evening I needed a “meat-like substance” to complete MustGo (the once/week event where we empty remaining foods from the week out of the refrigerator and….well…either we eat it then or…wait for it… it MUST GO!) and found the Oncore frozen item that came close to resembling a facsimile of boneless barbecued ribs…without the bones…and made with some chicken….and pretty runny but mild barbecue sauce. The box held six pieces but cost under $4.00 . Heaven only know how many preservatives or other chemicals we ingested (but the sodium count was only 20% of the RDA!), but it was cheap!!

Blech. (I would like the pear)

But look at you being all healthy! Show off.

Save A Lot and Aldis have some pretty inexpensive frozen meals (and fruits and veggies). Tom likes the Banquet meals and the pot pies. I think they have too much sodium to eat all the time, but they are good once in a while.
