Man Candles

I went to Marshall’s yesterday to look at their furniture. I was looking to replace some specific furniture items that were unsalvageable after the fire. I didn’t find what I was looking for, but I did see some interesting candles. They seem to be marketed for men. They were marked as smelling like an auto shop, wood stain, tobacco, and machine shop/coffee. They had very non-fruity and non flowery scents, but I was disappointed to find out that they didn’t really smell like the scents on the labels.

It was still fun to have seen them. If a candle store had a shelf of different kinds of unusual scents like these, I’d definitely check them all out. But I would hope that at least one of them smelled like it was labeled.

I liked Tobacco Noir the best.

I wager the company devised these as camouflage for gents who enjoy a fragrant candle but don’t want to be called sissies by their macho friends. Then one could freely burn one’s can of metal polish on the shelf in the workroom without attracting much attention….outside of “Hey, Bob – why is your can of metal polish burning over there?”

Yay for a quest! Are you secretly glad you didn’t find what you were looking for? Then the quest can be prolonged.

As for the candles, Lloyd could come up with a line for the computer geeks: Stale Cheetos. Cold Pizza.

    Haha! Those candles are hilarious!

I’d like to see a just-off-the-press ditto or brand new book/magazine pages candle.

So check it out… I can’t vouch for all of these candles, but the “Automotive Enamel” not only smells great, but burns all the way down to the end and didn’t cost $10. And while it may not smell exactly as indicated on the label, I rarely find any candles that do. Hell, I find candles that cost over $50 and sometimes they smell and burn like you’d hope they would, but more often than not they’re a let down. I say, if you find one of these candles give them a shot. Worst case scenario, you’re out $10.

Thanks for the recommendation, Rusch. I keep going back to those candles whenever I’m in Marshall’s. Maybe I’ll break down and get one.

I haven’t gotten any yet, Laura. I think I want to get one of the “pipe tobacco” or “leather” scents, but I haven’t seem to have found the right one yet.

Does your Marshalls still have these? What city? I can’t find them in Indiana and I want to buy them.

I live in Baltimore, Maryland. These particular candles are not at my Marshalls any more. There are other non-traditional scents, but even they seem to be fewer in number lately.

the Automotive Enamel is a really, really “really” nice candle to the point where I’m looking for more to buy to stock up. I’m a girly-girl -not a tomboy- with a really good fashion sense and asked to model on fashion looks, who can ALSO appreciate man-toys, the latest in power tools, the cool antique woodworking tools and a good episode of the Mecum Auctions and DIY shows and antique car shows. And the Saw Dust (although not purchased) did smell like my fathers’ workshop when I was growing up as he was a hardwood floor refinisher and he was cutting wood for work or projects all my life while I was living at home. I can only imagine it smells that much better lit for that subtle hot blade on wood almost ‘burn’ smell that you get when you cut enough wood on a ‘hot’ blade.
