Fixture Frustration

While my house is being worked on, I have wanted to do little projects, but I’ve worried about being in the way. The other day, I thought I’d sneak in at the end of the day and replace my dining room light fixture. Since the dining room floors will soon be sanded and refinished, it wouldn’t matter if I made a mess on the floor.

After removing the old fixture, I had second thoughts. There are eight wires coming out of the living room ceiling. Four were bound together and connected to a white wire. Three were bound together and connected to nothing. One was connected to a black wire. I would cut them all and re-bind them in a similar fashion, but there are two problems: the hole in the ceiling is very small, and I don’t have any tools because they’re all still in storage.

I think I’ll have to hire someone to do this one. It’s embarrassing though. I’m paying someone to change a light fixture?

The connections to the old light fixture were rotted down to bare wire.

Heck YEAH you need to hire someone to fix that light fixture. You also need to be on standby with an AED machine to restart their heart after they get electrocuted. That looks soooooo unsafe.

Can you say “Who wants another house fire? Anybody? Anybody??” Yea – go pro on this one. Outside to the dent to the wallet, I doubt you’ll regret the decision – you might have cause to regret otherwise, eh?

I wouldn’t touch THAT mess with a 10-foot pole! It’s time to call in the expert and find a new project.
Meanwhile, we ran new 2 x 3’s along the not-so-level joists from 1915 last night. It was good to see fresh lumber in our gutted room. We had to remove some old cylinder thingys holding old wire into the joists. I wonder if your Antonio ran into any of that. It’s fun seeing how they did things back in the “old days”. Lots of interesting nuggets behind those old walls.

Ahhhhh……that is terrifying! It’s like your ceiling is giving birth to an alien!
