Emergency CD

I gave the message in church yesterday. HERE it is for the archive.

After church, I drove down to school to get some planning done. Teaching at a new school and teaching new classes requires a fair amount of plan work. I’m excited about it, but also a bit trepidatious. It’s like I’m at the beginning of an enormous marathon. But I have to say that more than anything, I’m having a TON of fun.

As I was working yesterday, I started to feel sleepy. Around 2 or 3 in the afternoon is always the worst for me. I decided to skip all the preliminaries and break out the big guns: I put my CD by Electric Light Orchestra in the CD player. The album is called “Time”. It’s a science fiction themed album. I know all the words to every song. It was what I used to play on long car trips when I was trying to stay awake while driving. My body is now programmed to wake up whenever I hear these songs – especially because I sing all of them at the top of my lungs. I’m glad no one else was at school.

I think this may be the first CD I ever bought.

REO Speedwagon, Greatest Hits. That’s mine.

Does everyone have an emergency CD, or is it genetic?

Ha! Let’s hear it for music revving up the soul! I hope it was a productive day. Now, off to read your message!

Ok, message read. You wrote very well, and thank you for the thoughts to chew on. I was telling Lloyd that the last part of that passage always struck me as the passive-aggressive person’s dream: be nice so that burning coals will be heaped on your enemy’s head. “I’m going to be sooooo nice to you, you’ll pay!” I understand that I am missing the ‘no vengeance’ point of the passage. 😉

The Bible notes I read said that that was a quote from Psalms, and originally it did have a little bit more of a “stick it to ’em” meaning, but Paul was using the quote to say that a Christian would not seek personal vengeance, because that’s not what a Christian does.
