Welcome to Brad's online memory archives.

Number One

Last night was Back to School night at school. When I have an engagement in the evening at church or school, it doesn’t make sense for me to go home and come back again, so I stay through. One of my co-workers told me that if I wanted to have some really good pit beef, there was a little place nearby. She gave me directions.

It was a little tiny place nestled behind a liquor store and next to an overpass.

Not much to look at.

Not much to look at.

When I ordered my sandwich (rare, barbecue sauce on the side), the guy running the slicer asked if I wanted to taste a piece. I gladly accepted. Oh… My… Gosh! It was unquestionably the best pit beef I have ever had. I could hardly wait to get back to school and eat my sandwich.

I skipped the bread and just ate the meat with a little salt. Best. Dinner. Ever.

I will definitely be going back. This is my new favorite pit beef place.

I love how it looks so ramshackle. (The satellite dish – was it part of your directions?)

I had to look up pit beef. I assume they had the standing-up kind of pit, since that parking lot looks pit-free?

I didn’t know what pit beef was before I moved here. It’s just beef roast cooked over an open fire. It is served in small slices, sometimes cut by hand, and sometimes cut by a slicing machine. This place used a machine. The rare cuts I had were tender and juicy. They almost melted in my mouth. Mmm…

I didn’t know pit beef was a thing. Now I must have some.

Really? I never knew that ‘pit’ meats were a Baltimore thing.

We also have pit turkey & pit ham! All delicious!!! Dang, now my mouth is watering.

So you are not sharing the directions to this place, just in case I find myself on the west side at dinner time?

Well, you start at my school, then go to that one street that goes past the playground. When you come to a stoplight, turn left. That’ll take you across 695. Then you pass what looks like a ball field of some kind. Take a right at the next light. The next turn comes pretty quick, but there’s a light there, so you can’t miss it. Pull in behind the liquor store, and you’re there.
(I don’t know street names around my school yet)

Here’s an address for your GPS:
1602 N Rolling Rd Windsor Mill, MD 21244

        Ha! Thank you.
