Holiday Brass

My new church has been involved in an annual Christmas concert for eleven years. It’s a benefit concert for the International Women’s Brass Conference. The concert features (of course) lots of brass, but also choirs, organ, and special groups. This year the special group was a high school steel drum band. It was awesome! I could have listened to a whole concert of just them.

Since I was in the choir, I got to hear them up close and personal.

There were also bagpipes. I think they play the same piece each year. It’s called Highland Cathedral. I love it. It’s very moving.

It was fun singing in the choir. My favorite piece was “Christmas Day” by Gustav Holst. I know it’s played to death each Christmas season, but I love it!

We sang for a full church. It was at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen – a ginormous Roman Catholic church in Baltimore. One person thought he had heard the sanctuary holds two thousand.

We sang in the balcony before intermission and from the front after that.

Wow! I was not expecting that last picture to show so many people, even with the ‘two thousand people’ heads-up. That is a HUGE building! What a fantastic way to start off the season! Are you feeling super-Christmasy now or just really tired?

      Last night: Super Christmasy
      This morning: really tired

I spoiled the experience a little because I kept worrying about getting out of the parking lot quickly with all those people. I shouldn’t have worried. I was parked right by the exit and left the building as soon as the concert was over. I was one of the first people out. I was home by 10. Still, that’s pretty late for me. I’m often in bed by 8 or 8:30.

Indeed, Highland Cathedral made me tear up the year we attended this festivity – it is very moving alrightee. (But, then, does it take much to get to me on any given day?) Glad you were in the group of participants this go ’round – bet it gives a whole ‘nother perspective – though I wager the coffee pot got a work out the next day at school.
