I tried to fix the radio antenna on my truck yesterday. The stump of the old antenna is broken off inside the screw hole. I bought one of those things that are reverse-threaded and you drill into the stump and since you’re going in reverse, the screw stump is supposed to come out.
It was hard to get the bit to bite into the stump because the surface was uneven. I did get a hole drilled, but no loosening happened. The package of the reverse-screw bit says I should try the next size larger. I didn’t want to go back to the store, so it will have to wait for another day.
Wow! I am impressed that you worked on that. That would have been a deal-breaker for me, a “time for a new truck” kind of situation.
Brad, To get the bit started in the right place (center), it needs to be center-punched with a pointy type of punch—not a chisel. Too late now for your antenna.
Have a great new week in the Lord! Love, Dad
Shoot. I suspected as much. I bought a regular drill bit today, I’m thinking I’ll drill a hole through the entire stump and see if I can wiggle it loose that way.
I’m just impressed you tried something – that looked pretty hopeless from the get go. I’m thinking a bent wire hanger and some aluminum foil about now…?
