Welcome to Brad's online memory archives.

Flattening

We have a new pre-owned copy machine at school. It has lots of bells and whistles. On the finisher end of the machine, there are a pair of buttons that are a mystery to me. I can’t figure out what they do.

They appear to make curvy pages flat. It seems you can either choose to correct pages that curve down or pages that curve up. There also seems to be an “automatic” function that corrects both directions of curving.

    Try it with a shirt!

      Ha! Do it!

That sound like it could be a superhero name from Mystery Men: The Flattener”.

Also, are there enough papers with curvy pages that this is necessary? Does this machine produce curvy pages when it copies? Any ‘curvy’ pages at my work are actually mangled. Where’s that setting?

I don’t know that they make curvy papers flat… that’s my guess based on the pictures. Is it some kind of collating function maybe?

While I love a good mystery, this one is likely to keep me up tonight. No amount of Google image searching seems to produce anything close to what you took a picture of above. I say: curve some paper on purpose and try sending it through the thing. I mean, what could go wrong? [You could be the first staff member to jam the “new” machine – who doesn’t live for that sort of fame, eh?]

Yeah, we’re going to need the make and model of that machine, Brad.
