Patching

We’re starting a new unit in Life Skills class: home improvement/repair. I started with something I think is potentially useful for anyone who will live in a dorm or apartment – how to patch a hole in the wall.

I brought in a piece of drywall and used a hammer to put a bunch of dents in it. After showing the kids how to use joint compound to fill a dent, I had them each do it. I also showed video clips about patching larger holes with mesh tape and drywall pieces.

Things went pretty well with the eighth graders. I have sixth and seventh today. Then I have to figure out what to do with a heavily-patched piece of drywall…

We couldn't fix the holes where the hammer went all the way through.

You are a brilliant, brilliant teacher. Their future selves are going to thank you for getting their rent deposit back.

I think you should make that piece of drywall into some sort of art installation.

What An Awesome Idea!! There Are A Lot Of Home Repairs That You Can Teach Them About….and probably have experience to back up your teachings!!! <3 Aunt Bev 🙂 P.S. It's 12 degrees here and we have about 11 inches of snow on the ground…the sun is shining!!! The Pure White Snow Is Beautiful To Look At!!! Maybe not as much as you got, but ENOUGH!! Glad I don't HAVE TO go anywhere….AND…… Sears is supposed to deliver a new upright freezer (how appropriate) to me today. 🙂
